Ran into this in high school when my buddies and I took a road trip to Utah. Got to a gas station in Colorado and tried going in to pay for the gas while my buddy pumped it. Everyone looked at me like I was a complete idiot.
It's definitely a Northern/Midwest thing for the honor system gas pumps. No State in the south from Arizona to North Carolina allows such nonsense. LOL I'd have to imagine the stations around my house in Birmingham would get absolutely raped if they operated under such a system. I do see how it could benefit small town stores with low drive off risks because it forces you to go inside to pay and get stuff.
Sure, thats not my issue. Theyre charging me a fee to get him to my house so that I dont have to go to theirs for take out. If I go there and get takeout, I dont tip, so why should them coming to me get tips when they are compensated? In Oregon, delivery drivers usually make more.
Gas stations up here normally have video surveillance and would at least be able to report the vehicle license plate if someone took off without paying. Obviously if it were a problem they wouldn't allow people to pay afterward.
I have a summer home on the shore in NJ.... I never had an issue finding an open gas station..... Some cheap pricks on here seem to look for reasons not to tip......lol
I always paid after pumping until "pay at the pump" arrived, and I love not having to go inside to do so.
