Uh kind of dumb if you need to fill up at 3 am when you could do it at 7 am.

What I was saying about the convenience store is that because you have to pay the attendant, it is harder to be profitable without a convenience store.

No. One who works for pride in their Job doesn't get offended by lack of tip and throw quarters at you or come running after you for tips

I have no idea what you are saying here.

Do they have signs posted as you enter the state? I would venture to say that 95% of the population has no idea that NJ and OR have this law, so as a traveler you might not even realize it until it's too late. We flew into Seattle, rented a car and traveled down the coast of Oregon to go Salmon Fishing. Luckily I didn't have to buy gas while in Oregon, or I might have been up Sh*t creek because we left Seattle at like 3:30 in the morning to be at our fishing location by 5:30. I had no idea about that law.

Yea here there are gas attendants. You pull up and sit in your car like a pretty boy and wait for the guy to start the pump and run your card. Then you wait until it is done and he removes it. It is terrible. Nothing worth then pulling up to a 8 pump station and they have one guy out there barely walking around. Sometimes I get pissed off waiting for them to pull the pump when it's done and do that myself so I can leave.

Someone might have said something to you, but it's not something they give tickets over or anything. Just by saying you had no idea they would probably just laugh it off. I had someone yell at me for pulling the pump once and I told him I was tired of waiting and left. That's about it. I have other guys thank me because they were so busy. What's the worst is driving into Washington and forgetting they pump there own and sitting in you car for a few minutes waiting before you remember.

Yes you were on the main interstate which have 24 hour gas stations. it is a stupid law but it's even dumber to think that you can't plan to have enough gas in your tank. Each state has laws others don't know about. Like alcohol some places you can't buy on sundays! Stupid if you ask me but I just make sure I stock up. Same thing with oregon. There is also always aaa

Speaking of laws like that. Had no idea in Arizona they have a zero tolerance alcohol law when driving. You glow a .01% automatic DUI. Now I don't ever drive after I have had a few, but that made me not want to drive after havering one beer over dinner. Glad someone warned me before I made a business trip down there.

Hwy 101 is not an interstate, so I don't know if the gas stations were open 24/7, but it didn't seem like they were. Having an antiquated and out of date law that could potentially put travelers at risk seems to be a little different than not being able to buy beer on Sundays. Your not going to be stranded if you can't buy your beer.

People who work to do a good job are generally the ones trying to earn good tips and are the ones with pride...

You're going to places where the server throws quarters/runs after you? Think you need to reevaluate where you are going!

Thought you had taken the 5. I think you would have been sol on the 101. I think the better lesson is to read up on state laws or get familiar with the laws of the state you're visiting. Im sure I can find stupid antiquated laws that may harm people in your state too.

In certain cases that's a good idea, like towing a trailer registered in a state that doesn't require a license plate, but in this case it just seems idiotic. What's the reasoning behind this law? Did the state government just decide one day that the residents were too incompetent or too unintelligent to safely pump their own gas?

The Arizona thing is a myth. They have zero tolerance for minors like many other states, but for 21 and older it's .08....

The crazy one to me is that OR and NJ don't let you pump your own gas. I can't imagine how terrible it sucks traveling at night there. I am even more floored by this practice than by the northern gas stations who actually trust you enough to let you pump gas freely then come in and pay afterwards rather than pre paying...

I honestly think it's in those gas stations best interest to allow you to pay after pumping. The reason I say that is that 99.99% of people are honest and pay for their gas, so the losses on drive away's are really not that common. If it is pay at the pump or pre-pay, I almost never even go into the gas station. I just pump my gas and go. That is terrible for the gas station because there is a very thin profit margin on fuel and if I'm not going in getting a drink or a snack, they are basically losing money on me because of their overhead. We have several gas stations that let you pump first, then pay. I almost always buy something else while I'm in there.

Wow... I have always thought that all states were like this.

I have never been to a gas station that makes you pre pay before pumping gas.

Where I grew up, not only did you have to pay before you pump... but they wouldn't take anything bigger than a $20 and even those they used a counterfeit pen on. LOL You didn't want to go into the gas station anyhow because your car/truck would probably disappear while you were in there. :D

I handn't even realized this is a Northern thing? I think most people pay at the pump with a credit card which must be pre-authorized before you start pumping. We also probably have fewer scumbags up here who might steal gas? :)
