The farmer on the land I hunt planted soybeans with some sort of grass mixed in with it. Any idea what this grass could be? Sorry if this a newb question, but I have no idea. The other fields are just soybeans.

Does he also handle cattle? I'm guessing he needed some hay so planted a forage bean with some sort of grass crop to boost the protein level of the hay.

That's the only conceivable reason I can think of. Could be a spring barley or oats or several things for that matter, most probably an annual though.

No cattle that I know of unless on other property. Corn was planted in that field last year. I'll get pics today and post.

Planted at same time? Guessing it's a cover crop of some sort.

Honestly, I've never seen that. Assuming he's row cropping, I would expect he would want to get the best yield possible out of those beans, but maybe that field is having some issues and he's trying to correct them through a cover crop. I'd be curious to see what he's got going on.

Was the farmer able to till/disk fully this spring?

A lot of farmers here were only able to plant into the field without disking or anything because of all the rain.

The field was tilled under around the same time the other fields were tilled. I'm sure some are thinking....just ask the farmer, well that's not too easy. This farmer, for some reason sees me as an enemy rather than someone that's actually helping him out by thinning the herd of the deer that eat his crops, he even told me he would be planting edge to edge. Leaving no room to plant my plot in between his crops and wood line. I've been super nice to this guy and have done all I can to respect his crops. Some people are just mad at the world I guess.

i'd be thankful that he planted edge to edge, it will save you time, money, and disappointment of planting your own plot. Deer love soy beans.

As far as the grass with the bean, that is pretty puzzling.

I am very grateful for the beans. But they will gone in November. That's the reason for the much needed winter food source to hold the deer on the property.

I take it you don't own the property or you'd give the guy the boot for acting like that. My bet would be he's a deer hunter.

Must just be a cover crop, maybe went with bin run beans just because they were on hand but there were cheaper options for a nitrogen adding legume. Maybe he's just not too bright?

Screw'em, put a feeder out.

No I don't own it, I just have permission to hunt. I think he's just a grumpy old man lol. I'm not giving up though. I found his address and plan on killing him with kindness and maybe some $. I plan on making him my friend.

And the 275lb gravity feeder from Banks outdoors is on the way :)

Thanks for the help. I'll post a pic of the grass and bean mix soon.

I don't think he sprayed the beans for weeds yet.

Are you sure he planted it this year? Almost looks more like just volunteer beans and grass. The beans don't looks nearly thick enough to have been intended for a crop.

All I know for sure is that the field was sprayed and then tilled under. Then a few weeks later, those beans and grass game up. The field across had the same process but all beans, no grass.
