So to piggy off of my bugle thread....what is the most hair raising sound you have ever herd in the woods..?? explain.
The scream of a weasle getting smoked by an owl as I paddled along the shore at night... Scared the crap out of me
My batteries had died and I wasn't worried about it because I was walking down a road that my truck was parked on. It was blacker than black on this particular night and all of a sudden I heard a hair raising scream from a woman being murdered. At least that's what I thought until I had a chance to gather my dim wits about me and realized it was a mountain lion about 100 yards above me on the hill. I've never gone hunting with weak batteries since that night about 8 years ago.
A screech owl that sounded off about 5 feet from my best friends head one morning before daylight.... I was about 70 yards away and it made me jump... he almost fell outta stand!
Walking about 10yds from a bear and not knowing it until the smell (he was a smelly one). Pretty much the biggest shot of adrenaline I've had.
Just a few weeks ago on my honeymoon. I was up in the northern Adirondacks staying on a lakefront cabin with my wife. I woke up super early the one morning to get out and do some fishing. It wasn't light yet, but I couldn't sleep and decided to head down to the dock and get the canoe ready. I was leaning over next to the canoe, screwing my rod holder on.........and an animal started to aggressively growl at me from about 20 yards away, it was too dark to see much other than movement. I grabbed my fishing net (like that was going to be helpful ), stood up aggressively and yelled at it. It backed down about 15 yards and then held tight as I walked towards it.......it was between me and the cabin. It mock charged me one time, and I stood my ground as it turned only a few yards away and ran to the woods, stood there, and growled at me as I walked back to the cabin. Once I got the the cabin, I got a flashlight and was able to spot the largest gray fox I've ever seen. It stuck around for the better part of a half hour growling every time I opened the door to look for it. I've never seen one be aggressive but NY is infamous for rabies and distemper. Later that night I was grilling outside and it came back into camp again and growled at me. I didn't stick around and grabbed my burgers and finished them on the stove............. Next day, I was fishing outside. Saw a neighbor flagging us down from her boat dock. Turns out she was gardening and an aggressive fox came towards her, and had her trapped on her dock. She was a local and knew DEC employees.........I heard a few gunshots later that day and no more fox. Not sure what happened, or what was wrong with it..........but when it first growled at me and stood it's ground when it was dark that morning.............I about s&*t myself.
A mountain lion scream, hiking out in the dark from a wilderness fly fishing pond. It sounds like a woman screaming at the top of her lungs and it will flat out freak you out. The 3 miles that followed made me wish I could have given up on the 16-18" cut throats on every cast.
Nothing too freaky, really. Just got settled into the stand one morning while it was still pitch black out and I had a couple coons start fighting right beneath me, but that's about it. My buddy had a bobcat scream real close to him one morning when he was walking to his stand. I guess he just about sh!t himself!
my god guys intense, never had i have anything liek that happen to me. tho i did hear a donkey in the distance, man it will scare the wits out of you i tell ya.
Ever hunt a farm for the first year ever, and on the walk in hear pigs being slaughtered on the next ridge over (before you knew there was a pig farm there)? I walked in a different direction from my friend from my truck, and as soon as the screams started he calls me (being his first year hunting in the AM darkness alone and says, and I quote, "I don't know what the **** that was but I will be back at the truck in 20 seconds, meet me there!" and hangs up. I have to admit, it made the hair stand up on my neck as well.
I was hunting the east coast of NC, trying out a new spot. Got in the stand early and proceeded to hear what sounded like someone hitting a 2x4 against a tree - it continued up until it was just about light - turned out a beaver was building a dam about 15 yards away- but geez I thought someone was trying to chop my tree down
I've been within a 100 yards or so of a mountain lion when it let out a scream. Last year I was walking to my stand and next thing I know a bobcat and BIG coon were fighting about 10 yards away from me. They didn't stop when I put my light on them. Needless to say I ran away like a little girl
Opening morning of shotgun season 2000. I hit the button on my 1100 to close the action and about took off the end of my finger. Dad was hunting 200 yards away and heard me cussing. :D I guess I was whining a tad louder than I thought lol.
Bear hunting I've had some good ones Landon but the latest one I'll share with ya. I had about 20 minutes of shooting light left yet while I was bear hunting In northern Mn. The bait I was hunting had a very nice bear hitting It, some where In that 400lb dressed range I believe. Anyway the last half hour I heard him circle me but couldn't see him. He stopped off to the side of me (still couldn't see him) about 60 yards away and started chopping his teeth and lips (big bear do that If they know something Is at their bait). I've heard this before so it wasn't nothing knew but I was pissed because I knew I was running out of shooting light. He quit chopping his teeth 10 minutes or so before It got dark so I kinda thought maybe he left or possibly that he was coming In. Well It got dark and I didn't hear anything so I grabbed my light to crawl down out of my tree, little did I know that my light did not work. This has happened to me before also and man It sucks when your In thicker then thick junk. I could barely see the trail as I started making the 1/2 mile walk back through the woods to my truck when all of a sudden I heard that damn teeth chopping again. This time it scared me a little bit. I'm guessing he wasn't more then 20 to 30 yards from me when he did It this time. I stopped for a second or 2 but didn't even bother to look In the direction I heard him, I didn't want to know If he was there. He did this teeth chopping for about 5 minutes until I either couldn't hear him or that he just quit cause I was out of his area. I'll remember that night for many years!!
once out on maneuvers we were ambushed (all fake with MILES gear and blanks) but I was sleepin in my fox hole dreaming a sweet dream and sleepin VERY sound when the ambushers dropped an Artillery simulator right next to my m60 position... you know, the ones that whistle real loud and explode hard enough to throw dirt all over you (basically a firecracker that's the size of an empty toilet paper roll)... scared the bejesus outta me for about 5-10 seconds, then I was PO'd and grabbed my 60 and opened up to repel the attack... but the scariest thing I've ever seen/heard in the woods was once when my sled broke down up in UP, I was the last sled in the line and I broke down, no-one noticed right away and I started walking out to the road crossing which was about a mile or so... as I got to the street light I saw eyes on the trail and kept walking into the light, I was being followed by a couple wolves, luckily some other sledders came thru and scared 'em off and my buddies showed back up a couple minutes later... i was completely unarmed, only had a small AA LED flashlight on me... probably the most scared I've ever been out in the woods at night
I'm with englum's buddy....Bobcat scream about 30 yds behind my stand about an hour before daylight. The hair on the back of my neck literally stood on end. I am 60 yrs old and never, EVER heard anything like that before.
I had a Gray fox also bark at me as I was gutting a deer after dark. I had no clue what it was until I grabbed my larger light in my pack. With my headlamp I just saw glowing eyes. It was pretty wild and kinda creepy when your not sure what is making that sound and it's pitch black and you only have a knife.
While glassing a field edge one evening I spotted a rifle hunter who later explained he was just glassing me, he wasn't aiming at me. He didn't own binos and just glassed with his scope! I hit the dirt QUICK and started yelling. I started waving the orange bandana I keep in my pack, he came out from the brush covered fence line and we met in the middle of the pasture. I gave him a few choice words and explained some of the benefits of binos. I also asked if he had his safety on and a round in the chamber or not. I swear I thought I was going to be a statistic that day. I have no idea what kind of experience level this guy had. What if he was one of those yahoos that shoots at movement?
