I picked up a Sony A300 yesterday. I found it on Facebook Marketplace stupid cheap. I have zero experience in filming hunts or photography so I imagine I'll outgrow it eventually. I got it mainly for b-roll footage. Any idea what I can expect for performance?
If will be hard to outgrow that camera. The A6300 and A6500 are excellent cameras. I am running the A6500 this year as my primary camera and Skywalker has the A6300. Run a couple searches on here and you will see some recent threads on our setups.
The A300 is getting long in the teeth. I don't believe it has HD video capabilities. It is a good all around camera though and you can certainly learn a good deal from using it.
It's an older model circa 2008-09. After doing some research it looks like it's not capable of video, which is a total bummer. I should have done the research before lol. I didn't really know what I was looking at/for and I assumed it would have a video feature. It takes good still shots so it'll be good to learn on nonetheless.
Crap ... I am sorry ... I swore I read A6300 ... LOL. I retract everything that I typed ... LOL ... That is what I get for reading threads on my phone while watching TV. Yea that camera is getting pretty old in terms of current technology.
Yeah, I'm not real familiar with it. I was running a couple A57's which were a little newer than that one and did have HD video. They were actually excellent budget cameras with tons of features you couldn't get in that price range with Canon or Nikon. I think the A300 was probably 1 generation before those A57's. I was able to get a lot of outstanding photos with those cameras and I'm sure the A300 is nearly as capable for photography. Did it come with some lenses?
It came with 2 lenses. An 18-70 and a 70-200 (I think). Not sure if the apertures. I don't have it with me at the moment. It came with UV, Polarized, and warm filters (not sure if that is normal). I only spent $180 so for the price of a point and shoot I can learn more about the DSLR side of things, is how I look at it. Like I said, I have no clue what I'm doing. This is a way for me to explore the photography/videography side of things and learn something new...and now that I've cut down on what I carry in my hunting pack my hikes to the tree are too light lol.
I'm sure it will be good camera to learn with. I would guess it's probably a 75-300mm, The only 70-200mm Sony lens that I'm aware of is a high dollar F2.8 lens. If it came with that lens then you got a steal. The nice thing about the Sony A-mount is that you can get some older lenses from Minolta that will work on the camera. I have a Minolta 50mm F1.7 that is really nice for taking portrait type shots. Lets a lot of light in and gives you a nice soft background. You can usually find them on Ebay for less than $50.00. This lens is worth every penny. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Minolta-Max...259705?hash=item440c6d34f9:g:kywAAOSwg0BZxZWh
Say I upgraded the body to a mirrorless like an A5100 or A6000 etc., would I be able to use the lenses I have now?
Yes and no. The Camera you have uses an A mount and the A7 and A6000 series uses E mount lenses. It's because of mirrorless vs. Mirrored Dslr technology. You would have to buy an E mount to A mount adapter. That's the route I went so my A mount lenses will work on my E mount camera. Sent from my LG-H820 using Tapatalk
I use to have one. Mine didn't shoot video. I believe there was a similar model that did. Sent from my SM-S902L using Tapatalk
