Crazy stuff. I had something similar happen last year but it was 2 raccoons and a neighbors cat. His cat wasnt as lucky as your dog hough....
Make sure you thoroughly wash all that 'possum blood off. What breed is your dog anyway? Most dogs really wouldn't have a hard time dealing with one of those...
He is a Pit/lab mix haha, he brings dead rabbits to the door once in a while, they were mid fighting when my dad pulled my dog off of it. He was worried about rabies/what not. I'm sure my 90 pound dog would have came out on top haha.
Not to be rude, but your story about killing a opposum and being covered in it's blood made me laugh. Im not an evil guy either.
You're lucky to escape that encounter alive and with all limbs still attached, them oppossums are deadly. I mean like Thirteen days later zombie deadly. D.E.A.D.L.Y. I cringe every time I see a wicked oppossum, I once had one rip a horses head clean off.
we were so poor growing up we couldn't afford dogs or cats. So we kept a few possums as pets. They are actually very trainable and quite smart. We had them playing dead in no time at all.
This stuff never happens here... That suckered is prolly rabid... Is your dog up to date with his shots? Luke someone else said, if that blood got on you... You could be in trouble if it is rabid and it hit a mucous membrane (eyes, nose, mouth)
Yep, my dog just recently had his rabies shot. I was pretty worried about that too. I made sure it didn't anywhere on me that I could be in trouble with. It got on my mid forearms and legs, didn't see it anywhere else. I looked it up too and saw that opossums are highly resistant to rabies so that is a good sign. I think the sucker just wandered into the wrong yard...
As long as the dog is up to date on all shots it should be fine. A couple years ago one of my bird dogs came out of a brush pile with a coon on its head. Dog ended up with just a small cut on one ear. I called the vet and worried about rabies and anything else the dog could get. Vet said she was up to date on all her shots and not to worry
