I know stories from hunting camp always get a little stretched, but one story i have heard involves hunting on state land. since it's open to the public, a couple decided to have a romantic walk in the woods followed by a picnic. The hunter in the stand nearby thought about saying something, but decided not to (bad choice). The couple started to get a little whoopie in the middle of a nearby clearing. when all was said and done, the hunter stood up and preceded to clap in awe of the show he had seen.
Where do I start? Climbing up before first light I have had a flock of turkeys in my tree. They stayed there till dawn. I have had a large owl land in the limb in front of me. I have had a squirrel climb down the tree and put its paws on my hat. I have had a raccoon climb into the stand with me.
All I can think to say is it's a good thing I wear a harness, because if any of this **** happened to me I'd probably fall out of my stand. I don't want any animals that can bite, or otherwise harm me climbing around me. Owls, bears, coons, oh my... I guess I'm a little girl.. lol.. But none for me thanks. I think I'd take an arrow and start swinging it if it happened to me...
a ticked off raccoon will mess you up pretty bad if it wanted to. especially in a stand with nowhere to go
Quick funny story...last year around the beginning of the season I had a squirrel coming down the tree on me, about a foot from my head, while I was just staring at him praying he wouldn't get brave, he jumped to the tree in front of us about 10 feet away. Now my treestand was at least 25' up. The tree he landed on was and old dead one, with big chunks of bark barely hanging on to it. He happened to land on one, and as soon as he hit it...down he went! Bark and all, like a surf board! I seriously laughed my butt off for about 30 min. Good times, and these stories are what its all about! I'm sure a bear is a little more of a rush though!
worst one for me was a flying squirrel glided up and land on my chest, wouldn't be bad but i was watching a deer looking down. almost fell out of the tree. since then i have had 2 others ones land on me but i seen them coming.
Last year I got to the stand very early as I always do. Only a little moon light out. Had something crawl down my back, in between the tree and I. Felt kind of weird and fluffy. Was a little freaked out.
I've had my share of bear crawling up my stand tree while bear hunting (4 different times). I've had them as close as 1 foot. I could hear every breath a few of the close ones took easily and to see that sparkle In their eye Is a sight to be told! I loved It! I've had a couple different coon step on top of my head while above me crawling down the tree. Kinda neat there too.
I remember one time I climbed into my stand one dark morning and damn near grabed a hold of a porcupine lol. Now talk about a sticky situation that would have been...
Wolves=Scary One time I was bowhunting on some public land north of stevens point, WI for a morning hunt. Get to my tree climb up and have a pack of wolves running around just before legal shooting time. Let's just say that if it would have been an evening hunt I most likely would have stayed in the tree till the next morning!!! They are some big critters!
Oh where do I start. One afternoon I got up in my stand early and was dozing off when a little finch flew in and landed on my jacket. When it realized it wasnt a tree, it FREAKED out. On our property Ive got a stand on a ridge top and my mom is on the ridge on the other side of the ravine. Climbing up one morning a flock of turkeys flew out, scaring the crap out of me. Then, to boot, my moms starts YELLING for me, she thought I fell while climbing up. If a squirrel gets within arms reach, its gettting poked with an arrow.
was climbing a tree in my climber last year early season when it was still hot out ... about 15 feet up looked down to slide the bootom of the stand up and when i raised my head I was face to face with a snake ( still not sure what kind it was ) perched on the bark curved back in a defensive ready to strike kinda pose... was afraid to move up or down , because , even if he wasnt poisonous , which im pretty sure he wasnt, I didnt really want to get bit in the face by any snake. had my limbsaw strapped to the stand, eased it out of the sheath and whacked that sucker..then i peed a little in my pants and did the heebie jeebie shakes for about an hour.
2 weeks ago while setting up my stand I felt something fall in my ear. I just thought it was a piece of bark or something. For about the 10 min I was up there it felt like I had water moving around in my ear. I kept turning my head on its side trying to shake it out. On my climb down I felt something crawling out og my ear. Ended up sliding down the last 6-7 steps of my ladder and sure enough when I got to the bottom I had a spider crawling out of my ear! My brother in law was able to snag his web and get him out.
