When do bucks begin to start making rubs in ky? Are trails the only other way to scout them until then? Also would putting minera licks out in different areas help see ? Thanks for help and open for any advice!
They start making rubs around September when they start loosing the velvet. If you going to hunt early bow season I would watch any field such beans or any food plots. Other then that bucks start splitting up late September. What you see now it wont be the same by October. This year we are dry so I would be finding any water source.
"captain71" touched on some good points. Depending on what part of KY you are hunting will make a big deffernce in the amount of "buck sign" you will find and when. If you have the cash invest in some Trophey Rocks and set trail cameras on them... check your cameras every 2 weeks to assure that bucks have found them. If you are not getting any good pictures move the rock! Once you have established a good site you can introduce corn into the equation depending on your hunting ethics. Continue your trail camera scouting and try to find a pattern. Keep any water sources in mind if the summer continues to be dry. Kentucky is one of the few states that offer such an early deer season. Take your time and scout smart!
Ok, great. I already put a trophy rock in one spot and they love it! I am in southeastern ky and it has been very dry. I hope to be in the woods on sept 1. Thanks for the help! Also , what is something good to plant with little shade? Would like to put something where in the woods close to the creeks that run near it.
Bucks start losing their velvet in KY the second week of the season, so around September 7th-10th. You really only have a few days to capitalize on a buck if you want one in velvet. My recommendation is to hunt from 2-3 o'clock in the afternoon on opening weekend until Dark to get a buck. It'll be hot as balls but I saw the most deer I have ever seen (20+ at one time over my corn) around 3:30 on Opening day when it was almost 95 degrees. I wouldn't bother planting anything right now to get your pics, the main reason it being so dry. just go buy a couple hundred pounds of corn and throw it out in a few hot spots. 100 pounds in one spot lasts me about 3 days once the deer find the corn. I hunt in North-Eastern KY in Bracken County
