Anyone wear solid colors for stand hunting? I've started getting away from camo during gun season because I have to wear a huge orange vest anyways. Plus, the way deer's eyes work they see movement more than color. I was debating getting a pair of First Lite pants in solid "mud" just so I can wear them day-to-day, as well.
Camo definitely helps, especially when you have to draw. But it's not that important, last summer I bumped 3 doe out of their bedding into a field. I so for fun I snuck around them until I was downwind and proceeded to crawl up until I was about 30 yards away. I didnt think I could get any closer without them hearing me so I purposely scattered some leaves to make them stand and then just sat down. About 20 mins later one of the does finally decided to investigate. She got within 10 yards then stopped and just stared in my general direction bobbing her head. She knew something was wrong but couldn't quite make me out. After about 5 mins more she and the other 2 does wandered back to where I had pushed them from originally. I was wearing a blue tshirt and Levi's. I know I wouldn't have been able to draw on her like that. In that specific situation camo would have made little difference. Every little thing helps, but concealing your outline and being able to stay dead still are definitely more important then color. P.S. You could just get a camo t-shirt to throw over whatever you have. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
I wear black from the waist up in my blind but if not in the blind, always go camo. Even though deer see movement more than color, my theory is the solid pattern would be easier to pick up the movement and harder to disguise. At least this is my theory. I don't have any specific cases to back this up but it's what I tell myself.
When it gets cold, I wear my brown carhart bibs over my camo which covers up most of the pattern. Fred Bear is quoted as saying, "The best camo pattern is called sit down and be still. Your grandfather hunted deer in a red plaid coat. Think about that." He made a good point. I do purposely avoid colors in the blue spectrum though. I wear solids all the time, in the stand and on spot and stalk hunts. Camo is way over rated and over used.
Yeah during rifle it’s cold here and sometimes I just wear some Old snowboard pants with a heavy snowboard jacket Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Solid orange hoodie if it is too warm for my jacket if that counts. For bow hunting I just wear cheap **** from walmart or fleet farm
These days it seems to me everything is over rated and over used ........ I haven't had any problems wearing camo .
When I first started hunting is was brown Carhart bibs and jacket with my orange vest. My dad still actually wears this for gun season and he kills deer every year. Once I started bow hunting I started wearing camo but from time to time I will wear solid brown sweatshirts in the stand and haven't had an issue at all.
I wear solid first lite colors in combination with camo. I have the guide pants in conifer and the obsidians in the tan color as well as fusion that I alternate. Also wear my aerowool lightweight t shirt in the tan and the 230 g merino top in black. I really don't care about camo too much while the leaves are on the trees but once they've fallen I switch to fusion 100%. I wear the obsidians in the tan around town and I like them quite a bit
One of the biggest bucks I have taken with a bow was an evening hunt in bluejeans and red t shirt after working all day at the sawmill. Dumb deer. Be still and play the wind is the best concealment.
