I just don't know why anyone would do it. I mean.........it's 99% boredom, watching the world go by with no real activity. Ya gotta get up at Oh Dark Thirty, in the freezing cold, wind, rain......Climb a tree and sit. Then sit. When that's done, sit some more. Oh goodie, it's raining again. Here comes the wind. Climb down, go home. Who in their right frickin mind would do this day in and day out for 3 or 4 months out of the year? Did I mention ya gotta get up REALLY early? Drink coffee. Shower. Dress. Walk. Climb tree. Sit. BUCK!!! STAND! RANGE! DRAW! ANCHOR! RELEASE!!! Oh.......Now I know who wants to be a bowhunter. ME!!
Um.. I stand the whole time. I can say that when the weather really bites and nothing much is moving in the woods, I'm not thinking about bucks, I'm thinking about bowfishing in the warm Spring sun.
Don my friend (I can call you friend right? :D), Your cold, early, dark, windy, wet description sounds like heavan to me, as I sit on my back porch in the 73 degree weather without a breath of wind and stars all around. I can't wait..
To me its not 99% boredom, its 99% relaxing and unwinding, communing with Gods gift of the outdoors. And then 1% of OH CRAP, OH CRAP CALM DOWN, PICK A, WAIT, HERE HE COMES!
I often have those same thoughts and think...What made me want to go sit with my Dad when I was younger? It was gun only season then, I would sit on the platform of the stand with feet hanging over edge (only about 8 footer) while he stood the whole time. Of course it was Buck Only tags then in IL and all we saw was does...I was just waiting for him to say "let's get down and walk a little" just so I could feel my toes again. ...BUT I COULDN'T WAIT TO DO IT AGAIN THE NEXT MORNING...maybe it was the doughnuts on the drive there :D
"The best hour of the best day of the year is the first hour of deer season". Above quote from Sept D&DH article titled One more for Dad. A good read. The night before my outdoor adventures have become my new Christmas Eves, I'm as excited as an 8 year old and I usually pay for the lack of sleep the next day but it's all good.
The only reason YOU have to get up so early is because you drive at the speed of smell! You could sleep in for another hour if you would drive at least 50mph :D
You forgot the wet boots part. There is nothing in this world better then getting up in the dark many mornings in a row and one morning you realize your boots are still wet. Shoving your feet in those cold wet boots is the most fun you can have with your clothes on!
I like that quote! And I'm another one that can't sleep the night before the opener. This year I may try a few more Bud Light's and a Tylenol PM at 7 pm! LOL I can only imagine how its gonna be when it gets close to time to go to Illinois!
I'll take early morning sits in the cold up in a tree to early morning sits at my desk any day of the week.:D
