This morning at about 7:15am, while sitting in my stand I hear the unmistakable sound of a large caliber high powered rifle ring out, followed by a second shot a few seconds later. The second shot had that double thump sound you get when you hit your target. This shot was close, If I had to guess, I'd say it came from the piece of property to the west of me. I know there was someone hunting it this morning because I saw a truck head up that way on the dirt road, and could see the running lights off the truck through the timber as I walked to my stand. There were only two shots, about 10-15 minutes later, I heard the truck leaving, heading down the dirt road. Tonight, again there was a single shot from a high powered rifle coming from the same area. Rifle season doesn't start until next week, Coyote is the only large game that is in season and there was no calling so I highly doubt they were coyote hunting.

So, what would you do? Nothing? Contact the Conservation Agent and make him aware? I'm struggling with what I should have done?

I would contact the DNR or Conservation office. This is putting you in danger and they could also be doing something they are not supposed to be doing.

I suppose that's a possibility, even as unlikely as it appears. Not sure I know anyone that would go out of there way to travel to their hunting area before daylight. Wait till 7:15, take two shots in the matter of a couple seconds. Then come back around 4:30pm to the same area, and take one shot then. More than likely they were hunting out of season. I'm not the only one that noticed, I have a friend the hunts about a half mile south of me, and he heard it and pinpointed the sound to the same spot that I did.

In the morning situation as you described it I would have called the warden...as it is I would alert them to the activity because it is likely whomever was doing the shooting if they were successful, and having gotten away with, it there will be back.
