I was doing some serious scouting today on my new lease and found this little make-shift blind... Right on the property line, looking into my field. They can't even hunt their land from this blind, It was purposely built to hunt land they don't have permission on. The Landowner warned me of this up front. So I found it today and the line fence is built up with logs and off to one side are some other logs with a chair and a 5 gallon bucket in place. I don't know if doing what I did sends a "good" strong message, or will it have the negative effect... Your thoughts? This pic is standing in my field looking at the property line/blind And what they'll see when they come to hunt it... And on another happy note, I did get some good pics today!
I would personally get a huge trypod stand and put it directly in front of that thing with a funnel inside and a lone tube that ends above where they sit. Then I would wait until they sit there and. Your a smart fellow figure it out. lol.
Not a bad Idea at all... I was thinking a big piece of Plywood at first, but that would be a ton easier.
Hate to say it but all you probably did was waste a sign and ruffle some feathers. If the blind is on their property not much you can do about if they sit in it or not. I'm sure what you mean by on the line, is it surveyed at the field edge or a couple feet inside the woods? Another thing is they will certainly argue they can hunt their land from there especially if that's their land we see in the pic background. Never a good idea getting into a pissing contest right off the bat or showing your cards up front. Sometimes the best thing you can do is simply let your presence be known by being there, hunting there, riding by even when you aren't able to hunt, and just keeping tabs in general. Post the property heavily, get some of the posted signs that say "electronic surveillance" even if you don't have it. If you see them in a somewhat neutral situation talk to them introduce yourself tell them you're leasing the land let them know you have family hunting it as well (even if you dont), mention you talked to the warden a couple of times to find out about the hunting pressure in the area and if there were any problems in recent years(even if you didn't actually talk to the warden it's not hard to find out who it is and drop the name). Feel them out and make them think about if they want to risk trespassing on some heavily posted, heavily hunted land with some hunters who are on a first name basis with the warden. It's like chess only in the woods. However, if you do actually have problems call the warden explain the situation, you'd be surprised at how many nowadays will go investigate and look around and start showing up to scope things out. Sometimes that's all it takes to get peoples attention.
Trespassers and line shooters are suckwads. That said, if that blind is on their property, you have trespassed and damaged their property. I know it sounds stupid, but you are dealing with idiots. I've seen this play out badly, more than a few times. MI is the land of small parcels and border wars.
See, your thinking with the other side of my brain... the blind is Part of the fence... they sit on their side and hunt my field, nothing for them to hunt on their side and certainly no cover where they would be "watching" if they were hunting "their" side. The Posted sign is on the fence facing them. They can sit there all they want. I was just wanting them to know there is a new guy in town, maybe they won't feel like they can get away with hunting my side of the fence from theirs. I Know the landowners name, but have no idea who hunts it, and doubt I'll ever see them... or atleast hope not. I have no idea where this property "starts" at. This area is on the Back side of this place, cant just "roll" in... With this said, I don't what to sound like a prick, but that I mean business at the same time. I'm paying money that I worked for to hunt this land, not for someone to roll in illegally and free. I could probably call the landowner... but how do you start that conversation? And I personally know his brother, great guy, and went to school with his newphew, we were good friends... Seems a simple posted sign says plenty over approaching someone, because their land boders yours.. I think that would ruffle more feathers than a sign.
Barb wire runs through those logs you are looking at in that pic... So would you consider that trespassing(me putting that sign there)... A fence belongs to both parties, correct? Pissing someone off is the last thing I want to do... I just want them to know someone else is here, and where my stand is going to be I don't want them shooting in my direction...
I did the same thing last year after scout, scouting, even more hard work hanging a stand in a crappy tree so that I wasn't on the property line, some jack hole hangs a two man ladder stand right on the fence facing my property about 80 ft from my tini hang on. Never saw adeer there the rest of the season after that. I put about 3 signs up infront of his/her stand. P.S. I'm hanging 2 stands on the same property line this weekend. I won't hunt them, but they'll know I don't mess around. Fart sticks eaters.
If what you put the sign on is the fence line, you are within your right to hand that sign there. Like others have said though, you're probably pissing someone off, but maybe you scare them too. I like the tree idea. I would block their view from that field with all my ability. That's a ****ty situation to be in, especially if it's near the bucks you're seeing. Some people are crazy... be careful.
In Illinois, it's legal to sit on one property and shoot game on another. So fence sitters are within their rights to shoot a deer that is standing on someone else's field. They can not illegally trespass to retrieve said game but until they step onto property that they don't have permission on, there's nothing you can do but be annoyed.
