Hey guys so today I went out to my stand. Usually I go 430 and see the deer around 6. Today I got out there late like 530 and I get up in my stand and get ready and hear a blow. Im thinking to myself great I spooked one. But she starts coming back in.(yes!) So im paying attention to here and I guess squirrels are cleaning their trees out for hibernation and they are dropping stuff left n right from the trees so its noisy. Anyway. I hear a crackle behind me so I turn so so so slow and then I heard a huge blow and 6 deer take off! They where 20 yards away! I never had this happen but I've only been hunting since last year. They should come back right?? I have sugar beats out with sugar beat crush and vanilla extract which I could smell from my stand. I think im going to let things settle down until Monday il try hunting it again and check my pics on my game cam. But im scared I screwed myself. Your thoughts please!

deer don't have memories like we do.I've read that their memory are only a few minuted long, then they go back to their ''thing''.

I think you'll be OK, but it's always a good idea to have a few different stand sites ready (and preferrably on different properties), just in case one burns out. If you over-hunt the same area, the deer will respond by regularly skirting your stand.

You're still learning, bud, but no matter how careful you try to be, everybody bumps deer. It's virtually impossible not to.

Every move you make in the woods is a calculated risk, and lots of times, you'll be bumping out deer and not even knowing it.

    This statement bothers me...?

Im not saying your wrong, but to me it just dont make sense? I mean a deer is a creature of habit, yes, but they have to have some sort of memory?
I cant think of many examples but lets use human scent.....I have always heard that most deer learn to associate human smell as danger. If thats true well how do they remember that?
I always wonder how people can even try to figure this stuff out.

I am unsure of the short memory, would have to check that out. But on the other hand just cause an animal has a short memory doesn't mean it doeanthave natural instints that could have they associate smell with danger or something similar and habits could be natural as well.

If deer didn't have memory, they wouldn't go to the same bedding area. They wouldn't go to the same fields. They wouldn't go to the same watering holes. They wouldn't go the same scrapes. What type, or how good their memory is, hard to say. But they do have them.

Their memories are not as short as some think. I got busted in my stand by a nice buck one morning so I put up another stand about 40 yards away and waited for him to come out of his bed (cattail slew) that evening. When he popped out that evening, just before dark, he took a few steps and stared directly at my morning stand. Took a couple more steps and checked it out again. Figuring that the coast was clear, he proceeded in my direction only to pick me up via swirling wind. He never bedded there again. My experience is that their memories are directly related to how traumatic their encounter was. Were they unsure of your presence versus They were shot and wounded. The more traumatic the encounter the longer they'll avoid that spot.

I'd have to agree..isn't that how they learn what danger is in survival school???

How much cover do you have around your stand. I know one year I was on a straight tree with not much cover and busted a whole bunch of times because I stuck out like a sore thumb!

My stand is covered well with holly tree limbs I cut but to my left is so open. Im going to gave to put more cover or move my stand.. its twice they came in behind me to the left. One more time and im moving my stand back and facing it to the left where they come in.
