For those that don't know, I've been a warehouse manager for a couple of years now. I work in my own building, and until recently it's been all by myself. Last summer I needed a second person, so it's just the 2 of us. I work 27 miles from the main plant, and it's out in the middle of nowhere. Ya'll should have heard the turkeys gobblin this morning, it was awesome!

Anyway.....My boss came for a visit yesterday afternoon, which by the way, is very rare. Ok.....so....She tells me that a spot has opened and would like for me to take it. The job? Warehouse coordinator, to oversee our 3 warehouses. Sounds like quite the deal, huh? Not so fast.

I'm now going to be working at the main plant, back in the "general population." Not the nice country job I've had, but I can deal with it. Here's where it gets good. We're on a wage freeze so there will be no raise, but I did get a promise of one ASAP. And if that weren't "good" enough, I'm also on a vacation freeze because we are shorthanded so I can't take any days off.

Now let me see if I understand this correctly. I've been promoted to Coordinator, overseeing 3 warehouses. I don't get to work in a building by myself anymore, I don't get a raise, and I don't get to take any of my vacation. Hmmmm.....that's one strange promotion.

But in all honesty, this is the job I've been gunning for the last 2 years, and I'm incredibly thankful to even have a job. Lots of people at our factory are being layed off and employment terminated, and I'm getting a promotion. So please don't think I'm whining, because I'm not. But ya gotta admit.....I'm not so sure how much of a step up this is......LOL

Can you get the "promise" in writing? I would make sure they know that that is a priority to you.

They did that to my dad some years back. Made him the Foreman of a Mach. Shop.

A couple of months later, he went in, packed up his tools, and walked out. They did nothing to keep him. No raise, no nothing. He said screw em.

I'd be straight up with her. Why should you take on more duties for no more cash? Thats a fair question IMO. Vacation time you can't take? Thats as worthless as tits on a chicken.

On the other hand, I worked in a building 10 miles out in the country by myself for 2 years and I was about to lose my friggin mind. I'd be ready to get back into a normal working enviroment.

Tits on a chicken? I like chicken breasts. They cook up well.

So, is the promised raise worth it in money? I have worked warehousing all my career and retired from it 3 years ago. One thing I learned is promises mean absolutely nothing. Seems like you are giving up happiness with your present job for a title that doesn't reek the benefits and added stress that is bound to come with managing 3 warehouses. I hope it works out for you.

Lots of considerations. Will refusing the promotion jeapordize your current job? If you shine in the new position does it increase the liklihood of either further advancement with your present company or with a like company? Good luck with what ever you decide!

Don, do for you and yours. Security is more important than a raise at this point. Hopefully this new position will give you more of that.

Is this new position a "boss" over your old position?

This is PRECISELY why I took it. My company has been making cut backs, and the ones they seem to be targeting are the ones with seniority, 15 years and over. I've been here 16 years this June so anything I can do to gain some security is in my favor. This is simply NOT the time to pass up a job offer, just because I would rather stay out in the middle of nowhere. If I would have turned it down I highly suspect I would have been the next to go. With my acceptance of this position, I have secured my future for at least a year or two, and most likely up to 4 or 5.

Yes, this position is a "boss" over my last. I will find out the scope of exactly what this all entails in a meeting bright and early monday morning with some of the higher executives, including the head of the IT department. I suspect there is a bit more in store for me than I realize.

I'm actually looking forward to it, save the vacation freeze....that ticks me off quite a bit. I have 3 days I need to use by mid June, then I rollover and collect 21 more. If this freeze isn't thawed by then......I won't be able to attend the G2G this year either.....

It's a long story, but a little over 2 years ago I was on my way out the door. I mean ya'll.......I was w/in days of being unemployed, and it would have been completely my fault. For some reason they decided to give me the job I just had and I made the most of it. I really buckled down and worked hard, and now here I am......Moving up the ladder. God is behind it all, of that I have no doubt.

Times are tough. I'd be inclined to jump into it with both feet running hard. If the company is making all these cuts and freezes, things are tough. They're probably trying to keep it going. They'll drag along those who will try too. I wouldn't be all worried over 3 days lost vacation in this economy. Hell, we just had a company in Syracuse vote down pay cuts from $20 to 13. They had more meetings and the company said, we can't survive. We're closing. So all the politicians and union and company folks started talking again. The company came back with $16 vs. the old $20. The union voted again. They voted it down saying we'd rather be unemployed. The company informed everyone they would be. They're closing. 1000 plus out of work.

At the same time, I'd be looking for where I might go next..... just in case. If nothing else, being a team player and trying hard will get you some good resume recommendations.

If you keep on this track....

Within a couple more years you'll be president of the company and making half of what you are now!

Seriously, Congratulations Don! I'm glad to see one of our own upwardly mobile instead of today's trend of being outwardly mobile.
