Makes sense ... but he never made me out to be a threat as he didn't really figure out what I was ... of course his earlier confusion may have been cleared up by the broadhead inside of him :D

im glad you got it! as for the discussion i dont know much about why or why not, shoot maybe the deer fell on the way to dying near the end and that was the final blow. the broadhead clipped the second lung later... like i said just glad you recovered the deer!

I dont know Tony, I doubled L'ed a Doe one time with pass through, she did a 500 yard marathon, massive spray every where and even swam half way out into a pond before expiring,,,weird sometimes!

First off, nice buck and congats!!!

A deer running at 35 mph can travel 188 yards in 11 seconds. Death occurs after about 45 ounces of blood loss...about 95% of all double lung deer will die in 10-15 seconds.

Adrenalin dose some crazy things....A simple rule I hunt by, never stop or shot an alert deer. The last 5 deer I've killed did not go 100 yards combined, all were double lung, all were clean pass thurs using mechanicals.

I think Adrenalin was the case for me, My son had just shot the Doe mine was with, mine ran off and came back looking for the other Doe when I shot her. She did have a smoke trail going and was moving out when she was on the death run. cool stats JOSH!

I think the biggest factor was that the deer was on edge, not your shot. He didnt make you but he was investigating you and knew something wasnt right which put him on edge. Lets just say its possible to hit two identical deer with identical shots but the only difference is one deer is on edge one is completely relaxed. The deer on edge will almost always go farther because they already have the adrenaline pumping whereas the relaxed deer doesnt. The deer on edge is on the verge of its flight response kicking in and is ready to run and your shot just confirmed his need to run.

Maybe he kept running when most deer would have bedded, because he was in the open and felt unsafe? Maybe the arrow smarted in such as way that he thought he could run away from the pain? Perhaps the head cought enough of the spinal cord to register a pain reflex?

Was he running tail up or tail down?

I have to agree with those who have said that adrenaline causes strange things to happen. Then again wierd things happen all the time even without factoring in adrenaline. A good parallel to this is the buck that T-Bone shot in Texas that made it,... what was it - something like almost a thousand yards - and Michael Waddell shot it again. Travis made what appeared to be a perfectly placed shot, and that buck was still on it's feet walking like nothing had happened. I know you remember that. Stuff just happens.

As to the blood trail (or lack thereof), like I said on the phone when we talked, that's why I don't shoot Grim Reapers any longer. They killed the deer quickly, but I always got crappy blood trails - even on well placed shots with a complete pass-thru. In my opinion the blades just aren't sharp enough.

Maybe you really missed and an invisible Sasquatch picked up your arrow, chased the deer down and stabbed him for you because he knew you really needed a break after a tough week. What? It could happen.:alien:

So glad you recovered that buck Tony. This is a great Thread and helps many of us to understand shot deer. 3 instances:

    l. I shot a small Buck once, (put it out of its misery) with its guts all hanging out, he would run fast for awhile, drop and watch me follow him. I don't know who shot him but no one ever came. It was on a farm I owned. I don't know how that Buck kept going, he had the look of determination in his eyes.

    2. I shot a 9 pt last year, arrow went in and did not exit, Muzzy BH, he ran maybe 80 yds and piled up. Dressing him out, I saw it was a double lung hit, maybe just got the far lung.

    3. I shot a doe this year, I thought I lost, using Swacker, the shot went high, I found no blood and had to finally give up. She showed up on trail cam, with the wound clean thru, just under her backbone. She is all healed, fat as ever.

I am also, going back to Fixed BH's, after this year. I think I will go back to Muzzy's.

Yes, I do think thats where she was shot. It looks like the arrow went thru just under the top of her back.

Your last statement makes alot of sense. The buck I shot last year, was spooked, as he walked right up to the tree I was in following the estrous sent I put out. He bolted, but I got him to stop at 35yds for a shot, before he went a half mile. This years buck, was unaware I was there, and he went 40yds after the shot before dropping. Both were double lung shots.

this is a completely differen scenario but proves the point that a deer will keep going, even though logic would tell you it should have dropped dead. Growing up in the south, my first hunting expereiences was hunting deer with dogs. I was hunting with my dad and we were running a nice 6 pt and the deer crossed in front of us, we both hit the deer, me with a 12ga and my dad with a .270, it tumbled head over heels and got back up and kept running. To make a long story short, the buck was shot at three more times and hit at least twice, both times with rifles. My dad made the last shot to put him down. overall the deer ran almost 1 mile before he stopped. Of course he had 10-12 dogs chasing him and had people shooting at him....so... believe it or not but I have seen deer do amazing things.

I posted a pic not too long back where my dad found a deer swimming the river. which we found out was 2.2 miles across. Amazinig animals is all I have to say.

I don't won't any greif about running dogs, I haven't in over 13 years, it was just the way we were raised.

Years ago, I was fishing in the fall in Lake Erie for steelhead. I was fishing from shore, waded out about to hip deep. As we are fishing, we noticed something that looked like it was floating in the water a few hundred yards out, but it looked like it was moving. As it came closer, we still couldnt tell what it was. Finally, about 50yds away, you could make the head of a doe swimming back into shore. She collapsed on the beach and laid there for 1/2 hour, while we all just stood by and fished. She finally got up and walked off into the state park. I dont know how she got out there or why, but it was crazy to see. I would not have believed it if I didnt witness it.
