Went out for my third time ever yesterday afternoon with friends from work (went once last year, and once three years ago). I'm borrowing my father-in-laws clubs for long term (he doesn't play much and just said to hang on to them). I have ZERO experience or instruction (or skill for that matter:D). Most of the guys I was with were not great (only one is a solid shooter), and it was also my first time playing a scramble/best ball format. Long story short, while I hate some of the things you have to wear (something about playing a sport in a polo), I don't really seem to hate the game (minus how long it takes to play 18), but in all honesty, I'm BAD. I made some cool/lucky shots, and some solid drives, but there were way more bad things than good. I can't loft with a wedge to save my life. I can only hit my 5 iron somewhat consistently...all other irons I seem to top the ball. I can't hit my driver well (too much flex I was told by the guy playing with us who has a lot of experience), so I'm left hitting my 3 wood even in situations where we had a 587yd Par 5. I can putt decently, but in all honesty, decent in my mind is probably horrendous by most other standards It's a fun sport, but I'm not sure I have time/money to dedicate to another hobby, especially since I think I would tire of playing being as bad as I am. All in all, it was a good day, but I'll take hunting any day:D
Sounds like you had fun. That's what golf is all about for me. Funny thing about golf is you can have great days and horrible days. I used to try and take it serious and found myself getting to pissed off while doing something I enjoyed and is meant to relax me. But I took a break from it for just shy of 3 years and played my first 9 holes a couple weekends ago. I went into it with a totally "whatever" kind of attitude and had a blast. I didn't shoot that well and definitely not as well as when I played consistently but I had fun. And after all it was the first time in almost 3 years.
I golfed once...cause i kind of had to. It was my BIL's bachelor party. Fortunately there was beer, some good friends and it was a nice day. Otherwise it'd been completely wasted hitting little ball around.
If those are the majority of your problems after only playing once, you're in better shape than a lot of guys I've seen/played with. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk www.skyangler.com
Not exactly sure what this means. Your wedge is already "lofted". Don't try to help the ball get airborne, just swing it. Always accelerate. And swing down to make ball go UP. Could be a variety of things but I would check ball position first.\ Probably a lot of truth to that. As well as the rest of your clubs. It's cool to use a set someone gave you to get going and get your feet wet. But if you continue, you should seriously consider being fit for yourself and your own golf swing.... BIG difference. Simply comes with time. Putt to a 3 foot circle around the cup and try to get the correct speed starting out. One thing is for sure. You will NOT solve the golf mystery anytime soon. Takes a lot of practice. Take it a little at a time and continue to have fun. There is just so much to it. Like everything else, it depends on what level you want to take it to and how good you want to be (same as hunting really). For now just starting out I would just go get your body, hands and eyes used to making a golf swing. Some things will work itself out from repitition and muscle memory. Others you might need some advice. If you plan on continuing... get clubs fit to you and start out without developing bad habits. Grip, aim and stance would be lesson one. Ahhh i could go on for days. Good luck to ya and have fun.
Watch golf. You'd be better off spending a couple hours on the driving range and the putting green. Do that 3 times for every round of golf and you'll get better. Putting.... eye ball it and take a swag and then only concentrate on "HOW FAR". HOW FAR do I have to hit it to get it to the hole. Get the speed and you're a 2 putting fool. All of a sudden you'll start making some. Don't overswing. Don't try and guide it. Swing free and smooth and all the way through the ball to finish. Much better than trying to be the long ball. Take a series of lessons before you develop a lot of bad habits. Really, 5 or 6 lessons and practice time would amaze you. A couple hours or hour and half on the driving range and putting green is really cheap entertainment with positive results. Don't try to see how many balls you can hit correctly or feel good about. Play with your grip, your stance and swing easy and relaxed. I'm no good... but when I used to do these things my game improved tremendously. That was years ago. Health problems prevented me from playing last year or this year. I'm envious. It's a wonderful wonderful game.
I suck at golf, but I love it Like smctitan said -if those are the worst of your problems, you're off to a pretty solid start!
I don't know, either:D I just can't seem to get the ball to get up in the air very well like you should with a wedge. It either shoots straight (goes to far) or if it does come up, it's WAY too short of distance. Thanks for the tips, though, guys. As far as fitting for clubs, is the local club the best place to have this done? If I'm only going a few times a year, is it necessary/worth it? I suppose like archery, the earlier you develop bad habits, the longer they will be ingrained in your game.
You are SO already hooked, ROFL! and you don't even know it! Best advice I ever got was to keep my head down through the follow through, square shoulders. And try and shave a little turf understand the ball as I swung.... Topping the ball and skulling it are how most beginner's start... so much fun AND it is unconquerable ...:D
