So tonight I hard my first true rut hunting experience. Here's how my afternoon played out... I had a half day yoday at school and with all of the reports of rutting activity I took the opportunity to hit the woods. I got to the woods about 1 and saw that my uncle was there. As I enter the woods I realize he has been cutting wood for quite some time. I think crap, I drove 45 minutes to hunt a property where the deer have been spooked into the next county. I move on to my stand thinking "oh well atleast I'm not ay school still". On the way to the stand I check my trail cam that I placed on a deer trail. I see on the display that it has only taken 20 pictures in a week, more dissapointment. Fast forward to 4:45, 10 minutes till shooting closes, I still have yet to see anything other than squirrels. I start packing my things up as I come to the realization that I have completed another deerless hunt, one of many this season and last season. As I do one more look around before I pack up I see the first doe. The first doe appears pretty small, likely a yealing. I keep my eye on the doe in hopes that a buck will be in tow. After about 5 minutes of this doe making her way down the fence line 30 yards out I see two more does emerge behind the first doe, 5 minutes to the end of shooting light. These does appear to be large and mature. The head out farther into the field. As they pass the first doe they take off, I think "crap they winded me" but then a buck emerges. I cant see the buck that well but he had a smaller rack. As this buck chases off the two does I give him some grunts but he doesn't respond. I check my phone and see that shooting light has ended but I hear movement to my 10 o'clock. I see a buck enter the woods and start to head my way. Of course he pauses right in the shooting lane at 25 yards... This buck also appears to have a smaller rack and smaller body. I unnock my arrow and take a seat to see what he does. After watching him for a few minutes I yet again here movement from where this buck came from. I them see another deer enter the woods. As this new deer enters the woods I see his antlers and his huge body, although it's dark I can tell by his body he is a mature deer. I ofcourse stand there and say a few choice words under mt breath as a I shake my head.... All of the deer move on after another 15 minutes and I am able to get down from the stand without spooking any of them. Although I couldn't make it happen tonight it was a great hunt, I learned a ton, and most importantly I had fun. What do you guys this about doing work in the woods during the season? Have you guys ever take a shot after shooting time? Sorry for the long read I thought it would be some encouragement for the guys who like myself are having a slow season.
