An inch of snow and all hell breaks loose.... What a joke. I cant even comprehend how this much chaos came about from 1" of snow. I understand you don't have the proper equipment to deal with it, but why does the city not have an emergency plan of action JUST IN CASE something like this happens? There was more than enough warning from the weather channel, etc and nothing was done. There were no deaths, thank god, but the officials would rather have thousands upon thousands of people stranded on the interstate system for OVER 24 HOURS than to be a bit more prepared for something like this.
Despite my screen name I live in ND. ND does not salt roads and I often need to drive to work before the streets have been plowed from new snow (and alot more than an inch!). You just need to drive carefully using common sense. It's no less dangerous up here to drive on ice and snow.
Oh no I get the fact that as drivers if you are smart/careful it can alleviate it... My question was about the city/government. What could they have done to help the situation without salt/plow trucks?
A supply of salt on hand to use with the sand trucks. Invest in more salt/plow trucks. Atlanta has 30 spreaders, 40 snowplows and 70,000 tons of sand... Why werent they out there sooner? Coordinate better with the public and media... Dont let 1 million people out of work and school AT THE EXACT SAME TIME.
Oh I get it. Yeah probably nothing they can do. But we deal with those type of conditions on a daily basis. We have had ice on the streets most of the winter since it has been so cold and snowing so often. 4 wheel drive helps for control but not for breaking.
to my knowledge, at least in Atlanta, all of the salt/trucks were sent more South, as that was the prediction, that most of the snow/ice would stay to the South, thus the lack of support and why everyone was at work/school
It seems to me that the more I read about the situation that more people are trying to blame it on the meteorologists and the predictions... Which to me, is a total crock. Simply put... More planning and coordination needed to be done - On all fronts.
Well... Isnt that hilarious I bet that sums up 90% of the comments people leave on major news sites. "People who live in the south are such idiots because they dont know how to drive in the snow! etc, etc etc,"... smh.
People lacking in common sense, and being inapt at dealing with unforeseen emergent situations are not limited to any one area....
TRUTH! I live in rural central MN and have a 1hr 30min drive to MPLS for work each day... It's absolutely amazing some of the things I see during my commute. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
We have people that can't handle the roads in MN too...
Well I live in Dixie, we got 5-1/2" of snow yesterday, everything was shut down from schools to courthouses and most government offices, BUT we had high school basketball games anyway......Maybe us southerners are really more interested in sports instead of education. :p
Yes when we get a couple inches of snow down here everything shuts down. It shuts down to prevent incidents like what happened in bham and Atlanta. The reason this did happen is the forecasters were off by about 100 miles. Right up until yesterday morning bham was suppose to get a dusting. That's why nothing closed down. By the time they realized the storm was headed north it was too late. Everybody tried to get home as the storm hit and here we are today. It's not like everyone was sitting around and said hey I think I'll go for a drive now that the storm is over. Everyone got caught in it. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
