I've never witnessed more of an epic meltdown, panic, and over-reaction than I did in Birmingham yesterday over less than 1" of snow. I live less than a mile from campus and it took me 2 hrs to get home. My friend had to leave his vehicle on the interstate and walk 5 miles home. I bet there were over 500 wrecks yesterday. The city shut down every major road including interstates by mid afternoon. Our school placed cots in the gymnasium like it was a FEMA disaster relief scene for people to stay the night on campus. People were flooring it, slamming on brakes, and sheer panic took over lol. There is literally an abandoned car every 10 yards on the road.... http://m.imgur.com/a/woBtl
Wow that is crazy. Most places don't even do anything to clean up an inch of snow. Unless there was some ice underneath it I can't believe it shut the area down.
Yeah Bham and Atlanta are just disasters. My buddy's kid was stuck at school in Atlanta, so he walked 5 miles to the school to get his kid home. Another buddy slept at his office last night. Just crazy.
the South does not have the equipment to handle ice/snow like this and yes, 99% of the "snow" in the south is mostly ice
Some of those pictures look like scenes from The Walking Dead. lol I can't believe how bad that is because of a inch of snow.
the south's "snow" =/= the north's snow this isn't the fluffy stuff y'all are used to, it's mostly ice
It's literally exactly like a scene from The Walking Dead... One lady ended up giving birth in her backseat on I-20 cause the ambulance wrecked on the way to get her out of traffic lol. I had idk how many calls of people panicking saying to come get them cause they are stuck in their car in traffic...
The difference is in ability to deal with it. Birmingham doesn't even have snow plow trucks or salt trucks... They have a few sand trucks lol. That coupled with drivers who have never experienced it before and you have the recipe for disaster.
Every time a heat wave hits the northern states, we always hear about all the deaths and whatnot It is the same thing. It is simply because certain regions are not prepared for extreme weather because it doesn't happen all the time.
Why don't you come spend a winter up here. We get snow, we get ice, we get wind and snow drifts. Most of the time, we are driving on the roads before a plow or salt truck can get down it. You're probably right, snow in the south is probably harder to deal with than up here.
Never said it was harder to deal with. Just said that it wasn't just 1" of snow. It was mostly ice. And the south is not prepared for this type of weather like the northern states.
The inside of my house is 72 degrees year round and no hurricanes up here Temps in the 90's are common up here in the Summer. Not a big deal. Over 100 doesn't happen much though.
That is why I asked because I don't care where you are from ice is hard to deal with. We deal with it more so we are better equipped and you do hear about deaths every summer when it gets extremely hot for us in the summer but if places in the south had to deal with -50 degrees I think we would hear the same thing since you aren't used to it.
