I have known about snort wheeze calls for about 2 years but i don't know the best time to use the call or the best way to use it. When is the best time to use the call? My guess is during pre-peak rut. Do you grunt before using it or just start with the wheeze? Thanks.

Only time I've ever use it is when a buck is walking away from me. I turned around one of the biggest bucks I've ever seen come back to within 50 yards...

Did you use grunts with it or blow it just the one time?

I have never purchased one. Just because the few times I felt I needed one, I just did it vocally myself and brought the deer in. Once killed a nice 11 pt. who trotted in looking for a fight. The other couple times brought them in, just didn't have a good shot opportunity.
The 11 pt. was my first. I was walking in to my stand and it was still dark and the fog was extremely thick that morning. I bumped some deer just as I was getting to my stand. They were breaking brush as they went down hill from me toward a creek. I reached my ladder stand and it was still pitch black out. I finally dug my grunt call out of my day pack as I could still here the deer slowly moving around through the brush just down hill from me. I gave a small grunt and was instantly hammered with my first snort wheeze ever while hunting. Believe me if you have never heard one it will get your heart a racing. He was less then 50 yards away. The hair on the back of my neck raised, and up that ladder I went. I was not about to become a pin cushion for some pissed off buck. Once up the tree with arrow nocked and still hearing the deer milling around me. I decided to wait until it got light enough to see my pins. This took forever with the fog being so dense.
Finally it got light enough to see but I was still limited to about 30 yards with the dense fog, which didn't look to be lifting for quite awhile yet. I had not heard the deer for the last 5 minutes or more, so I gave a couple of soft grunts and was instantly followed by a deer snorting down by the creek. I thought it sounded like an alarm snort. I got my deer lure out and dumped the entire bottle to the ground. The deer just kept snorting not leaving or coming any closer. I cupped my hands together out of impulse and to the best of my ability let out the loudest snort wheeze like I heard moments earlier. I heard brush popping and the snorting continued non stop in a hurry towards me. Fast as I grabbed my bow and started to draw, he came out of the fog straight up hill at me. Still blowing and snorting the whole time. I reached full draw let out a baah, which locked him up. He raised his head up to look at me, as I put the pin on the center of the white patch of hair where neck and chest meet. The arrow buried to the fletching. He ran about 15 steps and nosed dived.

So each time I have done it. I was grunting first, got the bucks attention, but no commitment of coming towards me. Let out a snort wheeze and instantly here they came.

Have called in several bucks with the wheeze. I just make fist with my hand, leaving it open enough for air to pass through. Then make the sounds,"choo, choo, choo". The tempo is rapid and taper off on the final choo. No need to buy a call as the above will equal anyhting you can purchase.l

Last year i called in two bucks using the snort wheeze. i only call when i can see the buck and decide what to do once i see his reaction. once you get the buck curious its game over. They will want to check out what other buck is in the area and aslong as he cant smell or spot you he will come in a majority of the time. If i see a buck that doesnt look like he will come close i always start off with a short grunt. or if it is in the rut ill give two or three short grunts (imitating a tending grunt of a buck following a doe). the most important part is not to call once the buck has lifted his head to look in the direction of the call. because in his mind he heard what he thought was a grunt but hes not quite sure so he will come in to check it out if that makes sense. But deer have an excellent instinct of knowing where a sound is. once his attention is your way and you grunt he will tree you for sure. if he doesnt bite on that i will try the snort wheeze which usually works.

Last year i called to a buck and couldnt get him off of a doe he was dogging on a power line.. i grunted and bleated and hed look but didnt really care. So i decided id try the snort wheeze and boy did he come a running! He literally bolted to within 10 yards of my stand before i could even get my release on. His hair up on his neck and his ears pinned back it was an awesome experience. One tip for using the snort wheeze is it has to be believable .. its a territorial call that bucks use when they are ready to go at it. Therefore when i use it i really blow it loud like i mean business.

I grunt at first to get their attention then snort/wheeze with my mouth, no actual call!

I have only snort wheezed a couple times and its always when the bucks are walking away from me. I dont typically see really big deer but it's fun to toy with little deer when they walk away. I have had a couple think about coming back towards me but I think most realize that there is a dominate buck close and most of them trot away.
