When i set my first stand site this fall i got a shocker as i was putting up a ladder stand, a three foot black snake rolled off a limb within a foot of me that i did not see until it hit the ground in shock i moved over a little and another snake moved off a limb a few feet away. so i got the hell out of there and move across the small field, this was in a bean field on a small island of trees over a sinkhole and my guess is that there was a snake den in the sinkhole I hate snakes, this ground is full of sinkholes and caves, the farmer just plants around these little island holes and deer always hang around them, but not me no snakes please:D
Funny you posted this right now. I am watching Venom in Vegas right now. How about spending 10 days in a box with 100 snakes, the majority of which can kill you. Makes my skin crawl.
I love snakes, they are truly amazing creatures. In the past, I was freaked out by them, but now I have no problem with them at all, and I am appauled at the measures some people will go to just to kill a harmless water snake while fishing.
So I'll go ahead and assume you wouldn't be very happy to walk into your garage and find this little beauty I found last fall??? :D
I live on a rocky bluff over a small river here and we have copperhead snakes every where, i have found two in the garage and one in my finished basement. riding the lawnmower is always a treat around the lawn, i keep the grass very short, i have tried every thing from mothballs to chlorine tabs around the edge of my home to keep them out. the road next to mine is named copperhead ln go figure. my kids stayed out of the basement for months after that ordeal.
I'm fascinated by snakes, they are a truly fascinating species. That being said, I will only kill the snakes that can kill me. Otherwise, I leave them be
That snake was "Compliments" of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources...... They air-dropped in several thousand timber rattlers into SE Ohio in efforts to try to control the Wild Turkey population. The snake in the picture was maybe 12-14" long, but had 2 little tiny buds on it's tail, and after it tried to strike at me, it curled up and "tried" to rattle at me...... I pushed his head down w/ my cell phone, and put him up on the hood of my truck for a picture....:D
LOL gotta love what the government will do to "control" population eh. For the last 3 years they have alloted 3extra doe tag per WMU here ( and yes that is per hunter) Now we have a extremely low population of deer and a high population of wolves Never have run into a snake here while hunting ( too damn cold, besides all we have here are gartersnakes )
OH... that doesn't look like any timber rattlesnake that I have seen... they are usually a really dark color... that appears more like a Copperhead than any rattlesnake.
i'll get the hibbie-jeebies at first sight then i just figure im too big to eat and they go on their way. (note: i dont live where they pose much of a threat too)
I don't like snakes mainly because you usually don't see them until you're right on top of them! Yes, they generally want no part of you and I reciprocate.
Where I bowhunt (Philly suburbs) there's almost zero chance of seeing any kind of snake. If i do see one it's only a garter snake. Even while I'm trout fishing during the warm months in "snake country" up in Sullivan, Lycoming, Clinton, and Potter counties here in Pa, I have yet to come upon a rattler or copper head. I like it like that!
Well, being from snake valley, i am wearing snake boots til Dec. Had quite a few encounters this year actually, I stepped all over the top of a 5 ft. Copperhead toting in feed for a camera. I wouldnt go back in that spot for a while afterwards. Two black snakes and a chicken snake i walked up on. the best one was a 4 ft timber rattler that was in the V of a tree. I was scouting out a new tree and looked down at the base of the one I was going to hang the tree in and saw a that beauty, about as thick as my arm, layed out in the V of the tree, needless to say the stand did not go there.
Ditto. Early season this year, I was climbing up into my stand, I got to where the stand was about chin level with me and I focused my eyes directly to the stand platform and there was a MASSIVE spider of some kind (I always called them wolf-spiders but I don't think that's the right term for them) right on the edge of the platform less that a foot away from my face!! I leaned away (22' up) back while trying to come up with a plan to kill the little critter! I broke off a big piece of bark and tried smacking it, then it just crawled up my stand and went into my seat cushion!!!!!!! Once I got the balls to climb up into my stand I stood on the seat trying to smash it!! LOL
TELL ME ABOUT IT. I cannot stand spiders, we have barn spiders here and those things get to be as big as a half dollar and they are everywhere! Or when you are laying on the floor watching tv and all of a sudden you feel a little tingling on your neck and you realize its a spider! NO SIR haha snakes tho no big deal all we have are gardener snakes.
