That's because you can associate and differentiate, a deer doesn't have that same ability. Just saying.

I have never smoked ever but my Dad could not stop even when hunting. I used to get pissed when he would light up on the way to our spot from camp because of everything I did to stay as scent free as possible. I would avoid it if possible but my Dad did shoot a number of mature bucks.

My dad killed deer of both sexes and all ages (except fawns) for decades while smoking. Didn't affect his hunting at all.

Interesting!! Even though I don't smoke. I try not to alert deer by any means.

    Ex-smoker here.
I have killed deer with a lit one and others just after putting one out. I even had a Doe sniffing around my tree base where there was a few butts...just lifted her head a looked around.
Of most of my hunting areas, public ground, where people boated and/or fished (Reservoir) smoke was somewhat a regular thing I guess....so the Deer were accustomed to it I guess ?
I've heard stories of guys with cigars and Deer would almost follow the trail where the guy walked in ?

I was trying to quite smoking and started vaping...nothing but fruit flavors ;) since Deer are "curious creatures"
You have to set your mind to it to quit, so no cheating !
After a while you can dial down your nicotine level every few months until you're at 0...now you're ready and no withdraws...just the habit of hand to mouth.
Find an on-line vape site for help, and support.

My best suggestion to those who still do....go 20-25' up. ;)

Oh, and smoke/vape free for 5 or 6 months now.

No they can't tell the difference between a Marlboro or a Camel. But I personally think the smell of cigarette smoke, especially if encountered before, will turn them another direction. It may not affect a young buck as much but everyone who hunts deer knows older mature bucks are much more cautious.

Congratulations! Glad to hear it. Starting 4/1, they are going up almost $2 a pack here. I'm going to try and quit. Let me correct that, I'm going to quit. (Have to get in the right mind set). Not one good thing can come of continuing. Thanks for the short story. Every little bit of encouragement will help.

So tobacco smoke doesn't have its own distinct scent? Deer can tell the difference. When it comes to scent what alerts big bucks is something unnatural in their environment. The guys I know that smoked and hunted never killed anything. Probably a combo of the smell and movement.

From my perspective, depends on the wind, but avoid smoking while hunting.
