Not sure my bacon is going to pass the test tomorrow. This 8s my first attempt at it. Doesn't smell like bacon, not sure how much the smoking will change that. Cut off a strip and frying it now, doesn't have much of a smell to it. Curious to what it will taste like, I've never had to use salt on bacon before Crap, burned a portion of it while typing this
Hot damn! I made bacon! Tasted a lot better than I thought it was going to. Salty but not overly so and has a sweetness to it as well. If I pull off the smoke tomorrow should be pretty damned good! Cut pretty thick so got a touch darker on the end. Center portion burned bad
I just got some bacon cure to make my own as well. Hope to get to that in a couple weeks if I can locate some pork bellies without having to travel out of town.
@cls74 where on the animal did you cut that from? I have always wanted to try making venison bacon. Not sure what cut of meat use.
Venison bacon is usually ground blended with pork then seasoning. Shaped in a pan for smoking then sliced. You can use any cut of pork.
I didn't cut it, but it is pork belly. As sota said, venison bacon/beef bacon is usually ground and mixed with pork. You need fat that will render and fry and deer fat doesn't cut it. Think I've seen recipes where you can use whole muscle meat but I have never tried. Would be more like a salted meat rather than bacon.
Alright gentleman, any reason I shouldn't purchase this pellet grill/smoker? https://www.lowes.com/pd/Pit-Boss-Pro-Series-820-sq-in-Black-and-Chestnut-Pellet-Grill/1000601261
Those Pit bosses have great reviews and most seem to swear by 'em. While doing my research they came up often and if I was going to go with a pellet, that would be a big consideration.
I went ahead and pulled the trigger on a new smaller Smokin Tex 1400. Can't wait to make some sausage!
I learned that the CentrSota in town sells grill pellets, not a bad thing except the feed mill is not open on Saturdays.
No idea how I missed this thread - but that bacon looks amazing. It's on my list of to-dos for this summer. I have a Rectec (now Recteq post-lawsuit) RT-590 and I absolutely love it. Without a doubt, one the the best "large" purchases I've made in terms of quality and how much use I get out of it. I do a lot of the traditional BBQ cuts - ribs, brisket, pork shoulder, etc. I also cook a lot of venison & elk burgers on it as well. Works great for smoking venison summer sausage too. I own a pellet grill and have killed from a saddle. I'm one Fanatic suit away from the D-bag Trifecta.
Quick question I bought a traeger, I opened the manual envelope and in said envelope is a traeger sticker, if I do not deploy the sticker am I still a traeger d-bag? Keep in mind I have only told my family I bought a pellet stove not the brand. Also in the photo example of installation of the sticker the example is putting the sticker on your yeti cooler, so there is that ****** feature I am not taking part in.
I recently bought a Treager and thought the same thing about the drawing of a yeti! Don't even know where that sticker is now. Sent from my SM-G960U using Bowhunting.com Forums mobile app
