I started smoking at 18 and switched to snuff at 22. I'm 35 now. Several months, I think 5 or 6. I developed a "white patch" on the bottom of my tongue, I didn't do anything about, just ignored it, well it didn't go away. Monday of this past week went to my primary care doctor and he was concerned enough to send me to the ENT clinic (Ear Nose and Throat). 2 hours ago they numbed my tongue and when it was "asleep" then did a biopsy to send it to the lab to determin if's it's cancer or not. I'll know by Wednesday of next week the results. If you chew tobacco or even if you smoke and you see red or white patches, go get it checked and DON'T WAIT. I can tell you that the test and the biospy they did on my didn't hurt at the time. There is a reason why they gave me some strong Pain Meds after because it's hurts like a Son-of-a- *****. Look for the signs in your mouth and go see your doctor if you get a sore that doesn't heal within a week or so, or looks like a patch of white or red.
Hope all turns out well for you. I had to have skin from the roof of my mouth grafted to my lower jaw to stop my teeth from falling out due to chewing, the stuff is just plain toxic!
and then theres my 55yr old uncle still swingin the red man tobacco and has been for the past 25yrs... never smoked and so far he's been fine... makes me wonder, some people can do stuff like that their entire lives and still live to their 90's (my great aunt for instance who started dippin snuff at 9yrs old and died at 95) and then there's the guy that tried it for a week in high school and dies at 30 from mouth cancer...
Iowa, I am very sorry to hear of this, I sincerely hope it turns out to be nothing and that this event will cause you to quit. JIM, GOOD job!
My brother just lost his roommate; 30 yrs old, father of a 6 yr old boy. Started as tongue cancer, they removed over half of his tongue. Can you imagine? Remission for a while. Returned in his lungs and lymph nodes. Passed within a 4-6 weeks. He was a grown man, weighing less than 80lbs at the time of his passing. He didn't smoke or chew a day in his life. IB, you're in my thoughts and I wish you the very best results possible. Good luck!
Thanks for all the kind words. Well, thanks ya'll. I'm sorry that it took something like this to get it through my thick skull that it's time to quit. I haven't had a "dip" since monday and am having pretty good luck with the nicotine cough drop looking like thangs. One thing the Doctor didn't think was very funny was when I told her. "My wife say's that sometimes I have a "Sharp Tongue" will you be able to round 'er off alittle???" Damn Docs don't have no sense of humor.
This is the main reason I quit. I got tired of worrying about it. I have a cousin that has have his jaw gone. Sad freakin sight. I had white patches all the time and they would go away. I hate to hear this for you. Pray it goes well.
Hate to hear that man. Its probably nothing but this would be a great time to STOP! I tried it one time and thought I was a big shot. Had a dip in and tried to drink at the same time. Didn't work too well for me and I was hugging the porcelain all night. Never tried dipping again.
Bad News. Cancer Well, not going it say that it surprised me, but report came back. Cancer. Today, I had a CT of my head, Chest XRay and Labs drawn. Thursday Aug 12th they are doing surgery to remove part of my tounge where the cancer is. Hopefully, they will get it all. We'll see. Ya know what. Things could have been worse. Think about if I would have had Penis Cancer. They would be removing part of my ****. Sorry, bad attempt at humor. It can always be worse boys.
IB, I am very sorry to hear of the cancer. I hope they can remove everything and that you will be cancer free in no time. Keep your spirits up.
