This year I will be hunting a new property that I leased that is just 40 acres. I just got it and have never hunted anything that was this small before. Is there any tips or things that I should know, that would be helpful to me in hunting this property. It will only be me and my brother hunting it, so I will know where everyone is at. I can post an ariel map if it would help you guys. Any tips of help would be appreciated. Thanks!!

post a map, that should help you out alot. If there is easy access around the property, I would sneak in asap to do some quick looking around for trail entries into food sources, tracks and other sign without entering bedding areas. Do some roadside scouting towards sundown if all possible as well. good luck!

I hunt small tracts (some much smaller than yours......with some caveats).

Don't overhunt. Careful going in and out.

I'd take 5 great acres over 100 "iffy" acres ANY DAY.

    Good luck.

You can easily over hunt smaller hunting grounds. Only hunt when conditions are right. I'd also try and have a number of different ways to enter the property, so you don't get patterned. If it's only you and your brother, you should be able to keep the pressure down, plus with the small size, it should take you two too long to figure out every nook and cranny of it (ie. exactly how deer are using the property, how winds flows across it, etc, etc)

Good Luck this season and congrats on the new lease!

40 acres is likely more than you think. One of the places I am hunting this year is only a 10 acre woodlot. I've heard people killing big bucks on 5 acre lots. 40 acres if all woods for two guys is pretty good amount of room if you think about it.

I did some math. 40 acres is about 36.3 full football fields. Just saying.

You know I'm a nerd. What's the breakdown?......lol I came up with a different figure. You countin' end zones?

I hear what you're saying, and agree. I hunt a 20ac. patch, and only really hunt about 1/2 of it. 20ac. is quite a bit of room. And, it it abuts the right tract..........game on.

:D I'm a civil engineering tech so this is my cup of tea.

    1 acre = 43,560 sq ft.
A football field is 300'x160' (not counting end zones)= 48,000 sq ft.

Therefore there are 0.9075 football fields / Acre

    40 acres x 0.9075 = 36.3 football fields.

Bring that "dork meter" back out. :whip:

I caught a quick dose of dyslexia. I used 45,360 (but, otherwise the same figures you did).

BTW,......the 160' figure impressed me. Most people would have used 150'.

    Carry on. Standing, corrected.

Well you can't see it from the road so that kinda out of the question. lol

Here is a map. The place is in red and the road comes in on the northwest corner, and its a trail to this property and the surrounding ones , its not really a road. That is a river that borders it to the south and the field might be planted this year but not sure, will probably call the farmer that leases the farming rights this evening to ask if he is planting it and introduce myself.

    But here is the place:

    Thanks!!

    HUNT THE SOUTH, YOUNG MAN!

And SE of that "island" is a KILLER inside corner. The dirt road further defines it.

That looks like a great tract. Good luck.

I liked that corner too, but am not sure of a wind. I figure a southwest wind, to blow it into that field. Would that be best??

We have some land close to this style where we hunt. If you look at the south east corner and see the little L in the trees where it looks like a block of trees is missing, that is the type of area that we are seeing a bunch of movement. I have no explanation for it, and no reasoning behind it. But you might want to put a camera 10-20 yards inside that corner if you see any trails in there. Other than that, i would pick the SW corner like everyone else is saying.
