I have a hunting site/blog dedicated to small acreage/public land hunting (here) and would love to see and hear some of the success stories from any board members! I'd like to be able to link from my site to this thread just as a reinforcer that small acre lots, urban areas and public grounds if hunted correctly can and have provided some great harvests for people! So if you have some pictures from hunts that would match the criteria (no guided, huge leases, or large acreage please) please post your success picture, date and a short description if you can! Thanks!
I'll get the ball rolling on my own thread: In 2002 I would shock my father and family with a P&Y buck, which just so happened to be my first bow harvest and buck harvest all in one. It was November 13th and mere days from gun season opening up when this bruiser came cruising through our little 10 acre woods in the mid to late afternoon. That was the day we learned our wood's size wasn't a true indicator of the caliber of bucks we have using it. (Since then I've harvested 5 other bucks, 1 which makes P&Y and 2 in the 120's)
no luck for me but i am following your blog. it looks like you put a lot of work into it and i too believe that if you hunt public land seriously you can be successful. -Dan
Thanks Dan...hopefully something I write atleast entertains you if not teaches you something! (finger's crossed)
I hunt public land about 99% of the time. This deer was taken this year from a 50 acre parcel that receives a great deal of pressure. I don't really target big bucks as i'm pretty easy to please, this one is about average but I've seen much bigger. A friend of mine got his first deer ever this year in a county park that receives tremendous pressure, he saw deer every time out and actually missed an opportunity his second day ever in the woods. I really enjoy hunting public land and feel that if you put your time in there is good hunting to be had even in highly pressured areas.
Exactly striker...not that taking a buck anywhere isn't sweet but something about a public land buck or tiny parcel buck that adds that cherry on top!
yeah I hunt public land only .. I like the feeling of putting in the work to find the secluded spots and it paying off ... this might not be a monster but I harvested it on opening day and it's my first one in full velvet .. sorry about the "buck in truck" pic .. I've learned better since then .. lol
I am a new member here and hunt public land 100%. I have never leased any property in the past because I simply could not afford it. After years of sweating, working my tail off, and cussing, I would not want to hunt any other way. I posted this little video the other day, I am very proud of how things are starting to fall into place for my hunting buddy and myself, it is a feeling of satisfaction that compares to no other. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45Dlhf5SQbo&feature=feedu
Great stuff so far, but I know from just reading other threads there is more of you guys out there with stories or pics you could post!
I took a good one this year on public ground. I only hunt public ground so pretty well all of my deer meet your criteria. 166" 12 point for this year You can check out my photo album and see the ones taken in years past. I will post pics of this years buck when I can. The rack weighed close to 9 pounds
small 5 acres spot I'm hunting a new spot that I just got permission to hunt. It's 5 acres in a subdivision that has 5-10 acre tracts However I need all the advice I can get on how to hunt the spot i picked. I'm hunting above a trail running by a creek bed with a scrapped tree 30 yds from my stand. I put out a apple mineral lick block on a stump beside the trail to try an attract a deer. I put my climber out there Friday 11/25 and hunted sat without seeing anything. My sudden impact probably. I wont be back out until this Sat 12/3. Anything else I can do to be successful?
Chris if you could get me some aerials and possibly answer a few more questions I'd be glad to look into this new spot you acquired. I'll be honest hunting spots like what you described can be dead ends or absolute HONEY HOLES! Not sure if you read the article or not but a 170inch plus monster was shot on just 3 acres in a similar set up to what you have going on...so it's possible. That said a couple things: -Can the deer get to food anywhere reasonably close? -Water? How far? -Where is this at? (mineral blocks may be illegal...just a heads up) -Would you have permission to put in a 1/4-1/2 acre small food plot? -Let's look at those aerials. Hit me up with the aerials or atleast a nearby adress and I'll google earth it myself (not as preferred haha) my email is [email protected] Would you allow me to share your situation at my blog?
