Hey guys, I got a question. Ok, I know this is a bowhunting website, but I'm gonna do some slug gun hunting this year and I wanna know what slugs are the best. What have you had great luck with? They'll be for my Iowa whitetails. My gun is a 20 gauge h&r ultra slug hunter(rifled barrel) with a nikon pro staff scope. Thanks for any suggestions.

I just got a Savage bolt-action 20 ga this year and have experimented with a multitude of slugs with the best (for my gun) being Remington Accutip (2 3/4" and 3") and Federal Barnes Expander Tipped (3"). It is crazy to have a slug gun that shoots groups as well as my .300 WSM rifle!! The only problem I have experienced so far is that I need to clean the barrel after ever 2nd shot otherwise my 3rd shot can float around 6" off of the group. This does not bother me as I do not plan on taking any more than 1 shot at a deer anyways. Good luck!

I can tell you that the Hornady SST slugs were by far the worst of the group. They were good at 50 yards, but at 100 yards it became a 7-8" group which compared to the other slugs I mentioned above is VERY unacceptable!! With Remingtons and a cool, clean barrel the groups are golf-ball size.

I have the exact same gun but with a 50mm Nikon Buckmaster and I shoot the 2 3/4" Remington Buckhammers. They are plenty accurate(2"-3" at 100yds) but are about half($6-$7 a box) of what other sabot slugs cost. Most any slugs will shoot well in the H & R but I went with cost.

I have shot Brenneke black magic slugs, which are mean as hell, with good groups up to 50 yards and my main sabot I shot is the hornady sst. Both are in 12 guage, but I think they make some in 20. I have pulled some good kill groups at close to 100yds with the sst's
