I just heard from my cousin that the DNR (Michigan) decided to clear-cut for lumber near an area that I've hunted for almost 10 years on Drummond Island (Michigan/UP). The area I hunt is next to a natural funnel that works its way through the island...PRIME HUNTING. I have had a lot of luck in this area and consider it my sanctuary. My cousin seems to think that this clearing of timber has certain advantages, for instance the type of vegetation that grows shortly after...

Has anyone ever had this happen, and was it a blessing or complete bummer??

Can be a blessing, but I understand how "your" funnel might be altered. The new growth of vegatation and (hopefully) trees can be a magnet to the deer. Good luck

I should add that my best years hunting paper-mill land in northern WI was after our area was clear-cut. Of course, I was rifle hunting from a climbing tree stand, not bow-hunting.

I was part of a hunting camp that was 1800 ac of pine mixed with oaks.. starting 8 years ago the land owner started cutting and he never stoped. Started at 1800ac of woods now is about 800 ac. He would cut a part here then the next year somemore and always started at the start of the bow season. Anyways.. the first year he did that I ended up killing my best buck off of that land.. Then what I started doing was looking at google maps of the land and started finding the oaks that they left and the funnels that ran in there. Then wait till they replant. they put pines in the cut overs and in 5 years it was so thick and the deer love it.. It will turn out to still be your sanctuary just give it a year or two.. Turkeys love cutovers too. They like being able to see a long was and nothing over there heads. Good luck

Once I get a glance at what the DNR cut, I'll have to readjust my strategies a bit (which can be fun).
