Someday I'd like to get a whitetail. And next year I'm gonna try for an elk I hope. Been saving my copper for the elk fund. Really tho I'd just like to get my first set of antlers. Id shoot a bear if given the chance. It's kinda a hassle hear in California but if the situation presents itself I will take the shot. Pig is a hard hunt in California not really infested like in Texas. For a slam I think I'd only really be interested in the deer slam.
Actually that's the ONLY way I'd be interested in hunting them. I grew up coon hunting over hounds, squirrel hunting w mountain curs, slaying rabbits over beagles, and even on a bird hunt or two over GSPs... I LOVE hunting with good dogs. But I have hunted over bait, hunted urban areas, hunted out of tree stands, trapped/snared animals before, spot and stalked, even stooped as low as using a rifle about 9 years ago. I obviously have no hunting morals so I'm likely a bad example.
Seriously, I see no sport in that. jmo I Don't want to side-track this thread though. It would be a good topic/thread of it's own.
A few of our old coon hound pups made it out west for cats back in the day. My dad was a rep for the breed for many years, but I couldn't find any of those numbers after these years. Always thought that would be a fun hunt.
Just like people don't think you killing deer with your crossbow isn't sporting. See where I'm going with this? Yeah, maybe opinions should just be kept to oneself, if it has nothing to do with the thread.
Correct. Maybe I should have been more specific when I said cats. But, I thought anyone in this thread would have known what I meant, since its about "Slams."
Id love to shoot a cat! Something about hunting a hunter excites me. Sent from my SCH-R970 using Tapatalk
I could look it up but ill just ask here... where do you hunt musk ox....never would think "man id love to have a musk ox on the wall"...unless I win the mega then its slam on! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 2
Alaska or Canada.... Greenland just opened up bowhunting for them as well if I'm not mistaken. It's a hunt for the arctic experience, not the challenge of killing the animal. Essentially a 100% success rate. Experiencing the arctic circle in -40 to -60* temps while taking snow mobile sleds in over several miles is an experience I and many others want though. Like you, I won't be booking that hunt either though for the price... that is until I become an Alaskan resident, and can skip the $8-10k price tag guides offer.
You can hunt Greenland now. I would do a hunt up there, early season. Screw that cold ****. Best part about MT... I can get 9 of the 10 right here
Like Musk ox, I've heard stalking caribou isn't too difficult. I guess they don't have an instinctive fear of humans and you can just walk up on them.
Never chased a Muskox, but I have been up after Bou a few times. Caribou are not a sick bow stalk like speed goats, not even as hard as mule deer in unbroken terrain. But if they spot you they rarely will let you just walk into bow shot on them ......a long rifle shot maybe. Stalking Caribou is more like stalking the spot you hope them to be rather then the animal...it seems like they never stop moving. They are awesome to hunt, beautiful animals and the county is worth the trip in itself.
My experience as well. I didn't hit the migration of thousands of animals, but the bulls I saw were very cautious. Can't believe everything you see on Realtree Roadtrips and Archers Choice TV. Even getting within rifle range of an animal was undoable if you are in sight. Staying hidden behind hill crevices was the only option to get within half a mile of these animals. One caveat was that the young animals were incredibly dumb. They had no fear of humans (likely because they have never even seen a human/predator before).... Mature bulls/cows, not so much.
