As opening day gets closer I am more and more conflicted about my opening day plan. Hunt with the Marquis and have much greater odds at putting meat in the freezer? Its not really a slam dunk but my odds with the Marquis will be much greater than my odds with the Kanga longbow. Or, go for the challenge of my first deer kill with trad gear? I have killed a feral hog with traditional gear but not yet a deer. I firmly believe I will see deer and will have a shot opportunity opening weekend, Oct 3rd. I'm leaning towards using the compound to up my odds of a kill. My only kill on this property last year was a feral hog and my only deer came off the west Texas land. I don't want tag soup on the lease again and killing a doe early is important to me. Conditions will also play a role. I have 6 stands up and only 2 are suited to shooting the longbow due to its 66" length. If the wind isn't right for one of those 2 stands my decision will be made for me. I believe it will all come together for me on Friday the 2nd. I have never really faced this dilemma before. I never felt confidant enough with trad gear to even entertain the notion of trad gear on opening day. Effective range with the Marquis given optimum conditions-40yds ( a shot I would take) Longbow-17-18 yds.( again a shot I would take)
TX--kill a doe with your compound, then settle back down at try your luck with your longbow. An early season kill for meat will allow you to relax and hunt hard with your longbow.
Like you said, depending on the wind, your decision may be made for you. But I know what it's like to pay money for a lease and then get skunked. Not fun. You'll know what to do on Oct 2nd
Yep, kill the doe with the wheels and then Bogan your buck. Isn't your tag good for five deer? Best of luck
Greg, You gotta have the "want to" and the "desire" If you really want to get a deer with your bogan. Quit procrastinating and just take It out If you really want to shoot a deer with It. I mean no malice when I say this but If It's a question In your mind your probably better off taking the compound out.
There is no doubt about the want to and its not just about the meat. I want to kill with both bows. That said I don't want to miss an opportunity. I don't hunt in a very target rich environment. That has a LOT to do with my indecision. I'm pretty certain that unless conditions are ideal on opening morning I'll hunt with the Marquis. I do have a 3 month season ahead of me so once a deer is on the ground with one bow I should have time to get it done with the other.
