A woman that I work with has had a family of skunks move in under her deck. They have sprayed several times in the past week, the house stinks so bad that they are now staying in a hotel. Her husband has called exterminators, none would help with a skunk problem. She said she would pay me well if I kill the lil varmints. The kicker is, I have to use my bow since they live in a subdivision. Any tips for a first time skunk hunter?
I'd offer them a toxic cocktail before attemping to shoot them. Only if you know pets wouldn't take a sip. Which in a suburb is unlikely. So I'll agree with the shoot and run tactic
If shes only paying you to kill them your golden! As long as there dead, then they become her problem. jk of course Keep us updated on how the hunt turns out.
Ironically, Skunks can't stand the smell of mothballs. Had the same problem under our house once and the mothballs worked great on the first day. This is one case where "if a little is good then a lot is better" is in effect. Instructions Things You'll Need Mothballs Socks Plastic sandwich bags Suggest Edits 1. Wear gloves when handling mothballs and take them out of the package in a well-ventilated area. Mothballs contain the chemicals naphthalene and paradichlorobenzene, both of which are toxic if inhaled. 2 Insert a small handful of mothballs into a plastic sandwich bag. Leave the bag open and put it in an old sock. The plastic bag will prevent the chemicals in the mothballs from seeping into the soil and getting into your local groundwater. 3 Fill three or four socks with mothballs and lay them in front of the entrance to the skunk's den. The mothballs will release a strong odor that will cause it to abandon its home. Prolonged exposure to mothball vapors may be harmful to humans. 4 Remove the mothball-filled socks after the skunk has been gone for a couple of weeks.
They've tried mothballs, traps, amonia, fox urine and loud music. Nothing has worked. They shall die. :D
Well... I guess let the shooting commence then. If they won't go nicely... After the hunt, maybe you can post pictures posing with your prey?
My skunk stakeout produced no sightings last night. The owner decided to try some poison after I left.....guess it worked. The pic was taken about an hour after I went home.
1) Skunks are super easy to trap. 2) The peroxide, water, dishsoap and baking soda mix works very good to kill skunk scent. 3) What is it with the high skunk population in IL this year??? I've killed several this year and there are more showing up. This is the first year I've had to kill any here.
They had a live trap and a tube trap out for a week with various baits in them. The skunks would walk right past them, I saw their tracks lol.
I have seen a TON of skunks on the road at night this year, I was wondering about that too. I hit one with my truck, and it stunk for a month afterwards
I once hit one on my way fishing in Louisiana and it got wrapped around the axle of my boat trailer. Oh... it was bad. I traded my boat on the way home, which needed trading anyway but that certainly solidified the permission slip I needed from my wife... True Story. Glad they got them... I've been smelling one around our farm for the past couple nights. Hope it doesn't decide to take up residence.
there have been a few skunks around my house also...remember this thread from a couple months ago ?? I was cutting the lawn today, and I came around the edge where I have a retaining wall right next to the driveway. On top of the retaining wall there is a concrete cap of sorts and of course critters get under the cap because a lot of the soil is washed away, and the ground moves here in Wisconsin in the winter. Flash back to about a week ago where my son calls me at work and tells me he sees a stupid skunk walking on the north side of the house. He says it looks like it is hurt. Guess what folks, I found that skunk today while I was cutting the grass. About 6" of the head and neck was sticking out from under the concrete cap. It stunk too !! Deader than a doornail. I figure it had crawled under there to protect itself, but then it just died ! Well, I got a long pair of channel locks, put some gloves on and got a couple of garbage bags, I had to pull hard to get him unstuck from the concrete. Of course I think he has been dead for a number of days, so the maggots were in hog heaven already......I'm ready to lose breakfast, which was about 4 hours ago ... I finally got him double bagged and I figure I will take him to the city dump. No frickin way am I putting that bag in my Jeep. I throw him on top and hope that he wont fall off and bust open the bags on the way to the dump. Made it there okay, dumped in in the bin and took off...now my jeep inside smells like skunk just from being in the vicinity of this damn critter. this just made my day !
No offense to anyone, but anyone who uses live traps to catch skunks clearing are not thinking ahead.
