I have done skull mounts with peroxide before and turned out good. But I was wondering if I use bleach diluted with water. I know that if I use straight bleach that will turn the bones soft.

yes you have to cut it with water and make sure you tape up the bases really good. All i use is bleach but i also paint the skulls with a gloss white spray paint to give them a shine. But some people just like the normal bone look.

I would steer clear of using any bleach. I'd be too scared of a flaking effect that it does to the bone over time.

Go get some creme developer from a beauty salon. It's just creme based peroxide that women use to dye their hair.

Mix that was some kind of white powder. I use normal gym chalk. The chalk really doesn't do anything but help make the creme thicken up. You mix it until you have a nice thick paste then you cake it on the mount (after taping off the antlers). The paste stays on for a day or so and then just rinse it off with water. If that isn't white enough for you then re-apply for another day and so on. I found this method to work well, easy to apply, relatively clean and inexpensive.

Everything I've read said do not use bleach, even diluted. I usually go with the au naturale look. I have painted a couple flat white.

I found a dead head last year. still had the hide and meat on the head. Grabbed it and buried it for the year because it was old and smelly and didn't wana deal with all that. Came back next fall and almost all the meat was gone. Just had to wire brush it a little. I tried painting on some 40 percent peroxide from the beauty salon and it just wasn't working for me. so I ended up painting it. It might be cheating but it ended up looking really goode. skull mount.jpg
