Skull cleaning revisited Not satisfied with the blood staining in the bone of the buck my brother-in-law shot in the brain, I decided to try something different . It cost me a whopping $4. I went to wally world and bought some Oxi clean powder and a quart of 3% peroxide. I covered the antler bases with Saran wrap and tape in case this mixture would lighten the bases. I mixed 8 scoops of the Oxi clean with the quart of peroxide in my skull cleaning pot. I used a tooth brush to spread and coat the skull. I spent about 10 minutes on it. As you can see, It only covers the bottom of the kettle. This is not important now but will be later. Then I rinsed the skull and used a blow dryer. The results were very good. I wonder what would have happened if I left it in there longer? The skull is much whiter and many of the stains were removed. The teeth seemed to be most affected. The skull on the right is after the oxi clean. While I was rinsing and drying and uploading the photos, I placed another skull in the mixture. This is a skull I found in the woods while bowhunting/scouting a few weeks ago. I paid no attention and perhaps an hour had elapsed until I noticed the pot. The other skull was much dirtier having been rotting in the woods where the animal died. It seems the oxi clean and peroxide really went to work on all the gunk and stains from that skull. It did a hell of a job getting it clean too. I think this $4 investment was worth it.
Very nice, I've always heard to use salon strength 40 Poroxide, I think it just speeds up the process. I know not to use bleach, but I did anyway, and the results were fantastic....?
This is true, dont use Bleach, it will promote flacking down the road. 40% salon paste works excellent, past it on wrap it in cellophane to keep it on, and place under heat lamp for an hour or so, far enough away that you wont melt the cellophane. The 40% past is heat activated. You can also seal when done with modge podge found at hobby lobby for a little more glossy look if desired. Good job RCT!
Every one has there own ways so if any bodys interested, here is a link that you can do one in 5 hrs start to finish! http://www.taxidermy.net/forum/index.php/topic,125076.0.html
Rancid, I'm boiling out both the bucks I killed this season... I've got most of it out except the meat that's in the little holes running through the skull. Do you just keep it simmering until it all sort of "melts" away and out, or do you have any tricks up your sleeve to make it easy to get the last little remnants of meat off/out? Thanks
I use a pressure washer to finish up the skull. Works great on those little places especially if you can get a narrower stream.
I used your version for the most part. I ended up taking it into the car wash down the road and got the gray matter out and it also got some of the tougher areas clean. I think I may give the whitening another shot, but all in all I'm pleased with how it turned out. Posted it in the gun thread in the water cooler, not suire if you visit that area or not though. T
