I would like to start putting out some hunting situations that either I have had or that I think I could have. Just a discussion on what you would do. Situation one: you are hunting a stand over a very open area ( field or hardwoods). You picked this spot due to finding sign and it seems to be a funnel for the deer. It early morning and you see the big buck a long way off traveling out of your way but toward another stand you have. Do you sit tight, this is a stand that your scouting said would work? Or do you hightail it to the other stand and hope to cut him off? For argument sake the buck is not chasing or being chased just a slow steady walk. thanks for the input, ill be posting a new situation weekly.

How far away is the other stand? What kind of exit/entrance strategy do I have? Is the wind good?

I would probably sit tight, maybe try a calling sequence to bring him back

If you can see him. He will see you. No way to crawl into another stand in an open area. Am I missing something here?

I agree with fletch, doesn't seem smart. Is there more to this situation?

Been there and done that too many times. Stay put. If things don't happen today they may well work out next time. Moving and spooking him will be far worse than keeping him calm and unsuspecting for the next go around.

Let's say there's a ridge between the deer and you. The question is more directed to changing stands or not.

He could just as easily change course and wind up underneath the stand you are in. I still say stay put. Too big a chance of spooking him. JMO

Probably no definite right or wrong here. I just am sharing from my experience. I used to be a very impatient hunter. Tried many times to outguess and outrun deer to an ambush point. I can recall it working once. Being patient and staying put has a much higher success rate in my experience.

I would sit tight in the stand I'm already in. If you can see him then more than likely he'll see and you never when the wind will change and BAM your busted. Then theres a good chance you'll never see him again.
