I have a single pin adjustable sight a "Truglo® Range Rover" on my bow I like but have never hunted with it and was wondering if anybody else uses it and if I should go to a multi pin sight for faster acquisition.
It's of course personal preference. My thinking is if a big ol' sag daddy comes up in a hurry and I can't stop him, do I have time to range? Personally, I dont want to try that! FIXED!
I have an Hha single pin adjustable sight. I use it for hunting and love it but my personal limit for a shot is thirty yards and I can shoot out to thirty five yards pretty accurately with one pin. I do shoot out to seventy yards at the range so that's why I like the adjustable sight but for hunting I lock it in and know I'm good to thirty and if a deer is beyond that I just don't shoot, period.
I also have The Range Rover , . I have mine zeroed at 25 yards. I am good to 30 yards which is my max.
I've shot a pendulum sight for over 20 years and really like it. No guessing, no ranging, just aim and shoot. It's good to 35yds. For shooting on the ground, it can be locked down for almost any distance. Blessings......Pastorjim
I have the best of both world, fixed pin AND adjustable http://blackgoldsights.com/Bow_Sight_Ascent.aspx I had mine custom build with four pins (G,G, Y, G) with my yellow pin (40) being the slider pin. I never hunt past 40-50 yards but reducing pin clutter and still having the ability to practice out to 80+ was a big plus for me
Personal preference to me bow hunting is getting close to the deer . Everyone has a distance they won't shoot past 35 is mine. In fact I have never shot a deer over 30 yards with my bow.
I use a hit-man 7 pin sight by trophy ridge. Each pin is set to 10 yard increments. I feel confident at longer range shots. I would probably never shoot anything past 50-55 yards. Of course any of my longer range shots I must have calm conditions and nothing even close to being in the way between me and the animal for risks of taking a stupid shot and wounding the animal.
I shoot with the hha dial, ds-5019, instead of the slider arm it has a dial on the side. When I finally get to hunt this year (first year bowhunting), I plan to leave it set at about 25 yards and aim high or low if needed, and I think that 25 will be my max for this year, maybe even less. I didn't buy an adjustable for the ability to change it while hunting though, I got it for going to the range and having a pin for any range from 20-80. And on top of that, I got the lens kit for it, 2X. Highly recommend it.
Just my self imposed limit as I feel farther than that to much can go wrong. I practice at long distance but just don't want to chance it on an animal. I know guys who would shoot up to sixty and I don't have a problem with that a long a they are confident in the shot and aren't just taking a shot they know they shouldn't because its a trophy animal. Anyway its rare for me to hunt a spot that I could take a shot father than thirty.
I keep going back and forth on getting an adjustable one pin. I like the idea of them and the improved sight picture. Now that I've been shooting the new bow at the range, I have my first pin set to 20 and my second set to 40. Come hunting season I think I'll take the other two off.
I switch back and forth between a five pin fixed and the HHA but I always come back to the single pin.
