I have been thinking about buying either the Bad River Outdoors "Tagged Out" rangefinder or the Dead-On rangefinder and mounting it on my sight for quick referencing. Does anyone have one on their bow setup? If so, can you provide feedback as to how well it works. Thanks.
I think they are a nice idea, not sure how well they work though. As for the lack of feedback you are getting. I would attribute it to these are still a newer item and not many people own one. Good luck. If you decide to pick one up, be sure to do a review on it for the next guy who is seeking information on them.
These things are dumb. For example, let's say you decide to take your elk rangefinding sight on a snake hunt, and you put the belly line on the bottom. It would have you using your 90 yard pin, when really, the snake is only 5-10 yards away (possibly further, depending on the size of the snake). I mean really, are you going to make a different sight housing for every game animal (snake, chipmunk, rhino, etc.)? Let's say you're on a snake hunt, and are being charged by a hippo? Are you going to just take a wild guess at the yardage, or are you going to ask the hippo to chill out for a bit while you install your hippo rangefinding sight? Seriously.
I had one( The Clear Acrylic One ) from Bad River the first year they came out with them for Whitetail Deer. I used it to test on 3D targets / using the Mckenzie large alert deer and the Mckenzie Mule Deer ( If I can remember correctly it was for use on a mature deer.. having an average chest size of 16" 150lb deer to 18" 200lb deer ) I found it to be accurate shooting from the ground / I never tested it from an elevated position= I tested it out on the ground to 40 yards and was pleased with the results. I took it off my sight to shoot Techno Hunt and misplaced the darn thing so I never did get to test it on live deer.
You can buy a cheap plastic version online, and from what I understand you can even make one. I think this is one of those enhancements that people either like or don't and it is for more of a general idea rather than an exact distance. Something non electronic that is mounted on your bow will not give you an exact distance to an object you are looking at. you do it right though and it can give you a general idea. Good Hunting. Let us know how it works out.
