So I am trying to decide which fiber optic size I would like to get. What is your preference and why?
I have a 7 pin sight with .019 the first 3 and .01 the last 4 pins. .019 will cover the vitals from 50-90 yards.
Follow up question re. 5 pin sight (have mercy, I am a newbie at much of this having been out of the archery thing for 34 years). I do not plan to shoot beyond 40 yards, would 5 pins at 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 be crowding each other, and would it be better to have a .01 on the 35 and 40 yd pins?
Not sure what set up you are shooting but any of the newer bows are shooing fast enough its going to be crowded. Might want to only do 20,30,40 and practice shooting spliting your pins for those 5 shots.
Roughly, an arrow traveling at ~300 fps would have (roughly) the following drop, 20 25 30 35 40 0 -2.5 -6 -10 -15 Does this sound about right?
Wow, that was fast. I shoot a 50# recurve but keep hunting shots within 20 yds (as that is currently the max distance I can keep all shots within a 6" circle shooting "instinctive"). The bow I have on layaway is the Mission Blazer. I was able to get ridiculously small groups at least for me.
Pete Shepley uses either the .019 or .029 you can find the video on you tube on the drury outdoors channel under Pete's tips
Hold a .019 pin on the vitals of a 3d mulie@50 yards and You will see why .010 is much more effective past 30 yards. Your own eyesight will be a factor as well. Most whitetail hunters will be fine with .019 pins.
I had a Spothog sight custom built for me with 5 pins. The top two at 0.019 and the bottom 3 at 0.010. Best of both worlds I think.
