If your carrying for people protection get a small frame 357/.38. If your worried about bears and such get a can of bear spray for $30.
Honest answer: I haven't shot it, and hope I never have to. If I ever shoot it, it will be in an effort to save myself from a bear. Hopefully only takes one shot, lol.
good choice. I would shoot some to make sure that load feeds reliably but looks like a good combination and your gun is paid for. at the end of the day pistols are like broadheads, everyone has their favorite.
I pack a .357 loaded with .38+P ammo. It's a rossi 6" copy of the S&W 686. All I have to worry about around here is yotes or trouble, and I've never had trouble before.
If someone has already voiced this sorry but here's my 2 cents..... A .40 cal is probably enough to carry. Stepping up to a larger caliber and changing to a revolver doesn't make a ton of sense to me. Going to larger than .40 cal in a revolver is probably going to only give you 5 rounds and a crappy reload if you have to. Stick with a semi-auto and get at least 8, maybe 9 rounds in a .40 or if you have to go bigger, a .45. Unless you are trying to hunt with the hand gun, you don't need anything bigger. I will take double the capacity and quicker reload with a semi-auto over a revolver any day.
insurance. it can be a dangerous world and a pistol is a tool that might help extricate myself and my family from a problem.
I think the absolute worst possible thing that is in my area is a black bear but honestly they dont run that big around here until you get about another 2 hours north of me. I guess I carry it for the feeling of feeling safe. I absolutely hate walking in the dark to my stands during bow season and just having a handgun gives me that sense of safety. I think what i'll do instead of dishing out the money for a higher powered revolver is keep my .40 and get some Double tap or possibly even the new Buffalo Bore ammo. Hillbilly, My friend just said the same thing to me. I guess it does kind of make sense for me to have something with more rounds in it versus having only like 5 rounds in a revolver. I think last year I was just putting in 180 grain fmj American Eagle rounds. Where I live and bowhunt we are not use to bears and when I had an encounter a few years back it literally scared the **** out of me because the bear came in looking for me and kept huff growling. It was opening day of bow season in 2011 or 2012. It kept walking around my stand and I had nothing other than my bow. Well he eventually followed my scent to my tree and got mad because he couldnt find what he was smelling. He eventually bolted. I had the .40 cal so i just started carrying it but I should probably atleast get the right ammo for it since it is on the low end for bear power.

As far as firearm choice I don't have much to add that hasn't been said, but make sure you check your regulations. Here in MN it's illegal to carry a handgun of any type during bow season unless it's for concealed carry and you have your CCP. I can't say I agree with the rule but it is what it is. I'm guessing you probably already looked but just a heads up because I was surprised when I came across it.
It's not legal in IL. I've always thought it was a bit strange that I'm legal to carry the whole trip to my hunting place but the second I park the truck I've got to disarm myself before I start hiking in. If I were able to carry while hunting I'd likely have either my Glock 19 or 43 with 124gr+P Gold Dots in it. Not that I know from experience but I'd want something a bit thinner so that it wouldn't interfere with my climbing harness.
I carry my Kimber Custom II in 45. It's very effective at keeping the bogeyman away. I've come across to many bears, hogs, panthers, gators, and snakes to not carry. Didn't think much about it till my wife started going with me. It's one thing to fend yourself.
Man that's crazy! I can totally see why you wanna carry a pistol with you. I would too! My first thought if I ran into a bear and had to shoot would probably be panic! I want as many rounds as possible to hit it with cause I can tell you for sure they are gonna be in very quick succession and probably not all on target. And if worst case scenario you have to reload, a revolver ain't gonna be quick unless you're Jerry Miculek. And I guarantee you aren't gonna reload as quick as this guy!!! Even here in CA, you can't carry a pistol during archery only season even if you a CCP. You have to be a full time peace officer with powers of arrest. I have a CCP and can't carry during bow season. Reason #247 I will move out of CA when I retire.
Thanks guys for all your input. I do like the feel of an auto as far as how it holds etc. I don't have much experience with a revolver but having more rounds available in an auto does intrigue me. I was checking out the Glock 20 in 10 mm. going from a .40 cal to a 10 mm doesn't seem like much of a change? anyone know more details between the two that could give me some info. I've done a lot of reading lately and the 10 mm seems pretty popular but isn't it very similar to the .40 which I already have?
