Well, dmjarb01 and I are going to do some black bear hunting next year. I turned 21 this year and have been long waiting to buy my first pistol. I would like one for home protection and have considered many calibers. I would like something I could practice with and shoot for fun relatively cheaply, but I want something that'll give me some peace of mind walking into the bear woods with. Just wondering if anyone has any experience bowhunting bears and/or know what caliber I can get by shooting a charging bear with... Obviously a larger brush rifle would be ideal, but just not plausible packing in and out with the rest my gear. Insight?

But you may have to rethink your packing of other gear.

    No? Then how about this?

The Colt Anaconda is a great six shooter as I own one and love it. The Taurus Raging Bull 454 Casull is another great 5 shot revolver that I once owned but got rid of. The 454 kicks like nothing else I have ever shot and will take down a Cape Buffalo. Both are great guns.

Here is a nice handgun that my brother picked up last fall. I'd say it would do both jobs very well. This revolver takes both 45LC and .410 shells!

<---- The revolver I'm shooting in my pic is a Taurus Tracker 44 mag. I'd carry nothing less for bear protection, though I doubt you'd ever need to use it. It's a little under $400 and IMO the absolute most bang for the buck. The calibers that are affordable (40, 9mm, etc.) just don't pack the necessary power to get the job done.

44 super blackhawk... those ragin bulls and other exotic big bore revolvers are cool, but $$$$ and ammo is tough to get... stick with a 44 6 shooter... reliable, relatively inexpensive...

now for something that is an off-the-wall but excellent choice... FN Herstal 5point7, if you can find one... litte sucker shoots at 2300fps and the fmj rounds will penetrate like 37 layers of kevlar... not to mention the standard clip will hold like 22rds... quite an amazing little piece (and loud as hell), I've had one now for about 2 yrs, total blast to shoot... very unlike anything i've ever owned...

I wound up goin with a .45 acp. It probably may not be ideal for a bear, but its just blacks. I figure if u poke 3 or 4 hole the size of your thumb in a bears heart it'll probably slow him down considerably. I'd be concerned about penetration if it were brown bears or something, but I figured it'd be o.k. I definitely wanted something to double as home protection too, and it seems to be a well reputed round. Thanks for the advice.
