So I am unfortunate enough to have had two shoulder surgeries before hitting the ripe old age of 28. Once in college for baseball and once due to work. My question is what do some of you guys do to make sure you can bow hunt for as long as you can? My wife just bought me a Mathews Chill when I got home from military service and I want to make sure I can use it as long as I can even if it means turning down the pounds. Anything can help. I just started bow hunting and am hooked even though this happened but hey you have to make due with whatever hand you are dealt.

Brother all a guy can do is just hang tough and keep moving. Back the bow down some and do what you can to build that shoulder. Have fun and don't force things that are not meant to be. Ever watch Moneyball? We all love playing the game.

how many pounds is your bow ? But I would turn the pounds down. Also shoot as much as you can to stay in shape and build your muscles. Theres also some exercises you can do i hear but youd have to google that.

Money Ball. Oh Yes I happen to be an ex college baseball player and fanatic so I know the story well. I told the surgeon all I had to do was pull my bow back and play catch with my sons from now on. My Chill is at 60 lbs right now and I am thinking if I turn it down and possibly build it back up I will be ok. Unfortunately I have been through this process before so I know the rehab protocol all too well. I just don't want to lose the one hobby that I love so much.

Even 50 pounds is plenty enough to hunt with. My uncle has gone threw a shoulder surgery and he hunts with 50 pounds now thats about all he can draw but he kills deer just as good as the next guy with 70 pounds if not better. Back it down and enjoy what you love.

So if I have the bow set up originally for 60 lbs it can be changed 5 lbs either way correct? If I wanted to shoot 50 lbs it would require new cams?

No you dont need cams for any weight adjustments. Its the limbs that produce the weight is your bow a 50 to 60 pound or 60 to 70 ? If its a 50 to 60 you can go down to 50 or as high as 63 if its a 60 to 70 itll only go down to 60 no more and max at 73. If you want to adjust the weight do a full turn out on each limb to back it out. Do a turn on the top then a turn on the bottom limb bolt then so on. Do not turn one limb bolt more than a single turn without doing the other. Meaning dont turn one limb 3 times then the other you could mess up the timing. What poundage is you bow what model and pounds ?

Its not about how much you can pull back its about where you put the arrow in the animal.

Exactly josh i agree my wife hunts with 45 and my uncle hunts at 50 pounds and they both kill nice deer every season. Its not about being the strongest in the woods pulling 70 pounds its about a well placed shot on the animal. I back mine down to 60 or 65 in late season cause after sitting for 4 hours in negative weather its very hard to just grab your bow and draw 70 pounds and it doesnt matter how much your in shape when sitting in that cold of temps for long periods.

My bow is set at 41lbs. This does limit my range and shot selection but it has not stopped me from killing deer.

    Really. ;)

I used to hunt at higher poundage but years of bad form and small injuries have taken their toll. I went to an orthopedic surgeon who said I needed surgery but he would not do it unless I gave up shooting a bow. Because "I would just tear it right up again". ?????? My insurance sucked anyhow and would not cover any out patient surgery.

What helped me immensely was a good chiropractor. He said most of my pain, weakness and numbness was due to nerve impingment by scar tissue. He streched the heck out it (ouch) and there was instant improvement. After several visits I almost forgot I had a shoulder problem. He taught my husband how to do the stretches (because it's hard to stretch out my own shoulder in the needed way).

My shoulder is still messed up but I'm not in constant pain anymore. I will be trying to up my poundage this summer because I am now in elk country. :)

Thank you for your service and good luck out there!

Bow adjustments aside, they are solid. Form is also worth working on...tfox (and others) usually provides good content here, and you can search the forums as a lot has already been said on this topic.

However, to the physio part, or others that may have need...
Rehab or strengthening exercises for the rotator cuff can be found here, if needed: http://orthoinfo.aaos.org/PDFs/Rehab_Shoulder_5.pdf

Start with lighter weights/resistances and build up.
