There is an independent DC legislator that is calling for the Washington Redskins to change their name because it is "racist". They have been the "Redskins" as long as I can remember and their team logo is not derogatory as I see it. So my question is, should the Redskins change their name?
I don't feel they should. Native Americans have come out in support of the names, in almost every situation. I feel that if its not offensive to the people that it is portraying, it shouldn't be offensive to anyone.
No, I don't believe they should. It will probably happen sooner or later though. A local university here had to change it's name because they were called the Indians. I don't understand how that can be considered offensive, but I'm sure somebody cried about it that wasn't even of Native American descent.
I was going to say something about that. Chief is an actual term that Native Americans would use. Im on campus in Champaign now and i wish they would bring the Chief back.

The NCAA deemed the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux as derogatory and the name has since been retired. Ridiculous
The fighting Sioux name was approved by the two tribes years ago but the NCAA didn't accept that. When I went to school there years ago there was no disrespect intended in the name and has had none intended since. I believe there should have to be offense intended in a names use in order for it to be deemed offensive. Not just some PC group of buttheads pushing their feelings on some one because the can. He!!, their stance on the name always offended me but I guess that carries no weight. Oh yeah, I don't think the Redskins name should change.
This country is ridiculous has been agreed with too many times to quote again but I agree as well. My highschool was the redskins. First they targeted the mascot, then the name. They're now the titans. Everything has to be racism anymore. Imagine if a white(wnter your own race/ethnicity) entertainment television network was introduced, or we targeted BET as racist. The very thought of doing so would be declared racist. Racism fuels this country more than the constitution ever will, it's a sad reality. Illegal alien? It's racist to verify and single you out if you are, we'll give you a drivers license and promise not to impose on your rights that don't exist. Speeding? We'll drop the charges because we don't want the publicity of a racial profile suit. It's things like this that keep it alive. Don't like something? Let's figure out how to play the race/ethnicity card and we'll get it changed for you. If they're taking name suggestions just in case, maybe they should try the Washington Constitutionalists. I'd love to see one of these teams no matter the level of play to come up with some outrageous name that every time it's said/heard reminds us just how far this country has sunk. In the meantime we should allow more terrorists in because doing too many profile checks just might be racist and unjust.
Just think what would happen if the animal rights folks started saying that school names were offensive to certain species of animals.

Racism is one thing that really bugs me anymore... I'm probably going to piss someone off but whatever. There is no African American, no Japanese American, no Mexican American, no American Indian.... We are all just Americans. I do not call myself an European American. Get over it. There are Mexican/Black/Asian only scholarships and schools, black history months, BET, organizations set to defend their rights.... I can't celebrate my white history without being labeled a racist... I live very close to several Indian reservations. I respect a lot of people of the decent, others are absolute trash. Waste of the money they continually pull from the government. Disgusting really. They make more a year, while not working, than me and my wife do working 40+ hours a week. My cousins (50% chippewa) make $3200 every two weeks.... One is married, a registered RN, has three kids and is making a great life for herself. The other is in and out of jail, has a kid with a woman who hates him. The race card gets flown far to often anymore and its pathetic. This is not a white pride rant.
