I hope an indirect effect of lobbying against the inclusion of crossbows into archery seasons because of success rates doesn’t provoke a traditional vs compound platform that would bring fluidity to seasons and license numbers. Why would an institution whom truly wants what is best for the herd only limit themselves with crossbow data? Anyone who wants the truth or what is best for the herd would truly recognize the success rate differences with traditional and non-traditional archery equipment and incorporate season lengths and tags on such. Common sense would tell me traditional archers should be granted a much lengthier season.

My personal opinion is states have done their due diligence and have recognized that success rates for traditional equipment vs non-traditional equipment vs crossbows are noticeable, but not staggering. The hunting methods for big game with such weapons are mostly the same and have little impact on public safety. Again history has already proven that when we started to allow non-traditional equipment in the traditional archery seasons that we did not wipe out the herd. Seems with the better success rate of the compound came a huge increase in deer numbers, how can that be?

Meh….There is nothing to fear here carry on.

Correct, nothing to fear at all. Plenty to monitor and consider though. In fact, I don't think fear is ever even part of the discussion (expect on your part). Nobody mentioned fear or allowing fear to be a deciding factor. None of the state agencies or orgs I am aware of have taken fear as a consideration. The future of bowhunting and the preservation of it is worth preserving and protecting and maintaining. And there is nothing wrong with the stored energy shoulder fired weapons user to do the same for their activity.

"Traditional" equipment is human powered equipment. I know of many that shoot with no sights and no release and zero accessories but they use a compound. There is an entire club here dedicated to such. Its members shoot human powered bows without optional accessories but all use human powered bows. I think some want to confuse "optional accessories" that can be employed by some human powered bowhunters vs the inherent and non-optional features of stored energy, shoulder discharged weapons. That serves no real purpose and is wasted effort. Human power and draw cycle and letdown are the hallmarks of traditional bowhunting.

I'm not worried about the Airbow devastating animal populations across the nation. You can only shoot one thing at a time. If someone wants to use it great. The states just need to put x-bows and Airbows in the correct season; gun season. I can't comment on other states but CA has it right IMO. Archery season & general (gun) season. You can hunt with a vertical bow in both seasons. You can only hunt with an x-bow during the general (gun) season unless...... you have a Dr. note presented to and approved by our DFG stating you have a disability preventing you from drawing a vertical bow. Then you can use an x-bow during archery season. That's it, simple and easy. I'm hoping other states are this simple as well but as I'm reading the posts, it sounds like a lot of states have more than 2 basic seasons.

My view is, if you own the land then any legal method of taking should be legal during all seasons.

If its public land then do what the state says.

at some point if this path continues it will get out of control. i'll be able to use a device which contains a string to be considered archery equipment to launch grenades at deer. at some point people have to step up to the challenge. legitimate drs permits to use crossguns are acceptable to me. laziness is not.

Yep! I can send a 2018 shaft at about 1300 fps.... grouping leaves a bit to be desired and it is very hard on fletching and requires a lot of back stop.

For an Innovative Outdoorsman you sure have a closed mind. WI allows crossbows in Archery season. Maybe the xbowers have a higher success rate in Wisconsin because they are better hunters?
