How is it so different than military ranks? I plan to have both a Doctorate and a military rank beside my name in a few years, so don't get in a tizzy about me disrespecting the armed forces... Just curious.

What has a Commander, Captain, whatever rank you want to go with done to earn his rank that a PhD candidate didn't do to earn theirs? They earned respect as a Commander, but the day they were promoted to a Captain....they haven't done anything to earn respect as a captain as you imply... yet you still willingly use the title while turning your nose up at a title earned through education.

I just don't understand the mindset of people so adamant about showing respect to Cops, Military, Elders, Etc....then turn around and act like using the term Dr. _______ is laughable when said person earned the degree.

Did the original situation have more to do with the PhD being younger than you than the title itself?

Any serviceman or woman deserves respect in my opinion. It's not necessarily the title I respect, but the individual and the sacrifices that they made- for me. They've done something for me, for you, and for our country. That's where my respect for them comes from.

Someone that went to school and obtained their doctorate, doesn't impress me, and I don't feel as if I should have to respect them anymore than the next guy. It is what it is, an impressive feat, something to be proud of, but I don't think higher of someone with a doctorate than I do of someone with a GED.

    Tembry,

I was going to bring up that military and LEO earned their titles, but truth be told that is subjective. I have respect for people with PhDs, I could never imagine doing dissertations and all that crap, I don't even know if I would be able to even do what they did to get their PhDs. To me, military is forced and required, PhDs doesn't require you to call them by doctor but you have the option to. I dont know if you're in the military now, but if you spend just a couple of years you yearn to grow a beard and do things that you just can't do in the military. Before I joined I never wanted a beard or mustache, but now all I want to do is grow one because they tell me I can't!

I think the original situation had to do with that the person was younger, but also that he insisted on being called doctor. Ive had teachers and other people try to tell me to call them doctor because they earned it. Sure they've earned the right to be called doctor, but that does not mean that im required to call them that. For as long as I talk to them respectfully, that is good enough for me and should be good enough for them. I may get into a hissy fit that he is wanting me to call him/her doctor, but on the same note, he/she is getting into a hissy fit that im not.

They've earned the right to be called a title, that is it with a PhD.

I am not sure if the below was directed at me but I feel it was. The original situation had nothing to do with Dr Smith being younger than me. I am in my latter 30's and he was probably 5 years older than myself. Everyone that spoke with him called him Dr Smith, everyone that introduced did the same, and he also introduced himself as Dr. I don't know why but it got old.

I once arrested an ER Physician, and called him "Doctor".
He puked all over my pants and boots, so I downgraded him to "dude".

    Carry on. ;)

When and if you get a military rank in front of your name I would love to be around and hear that statement about somebody having a PhD earn it just as much as a old higher enlisted earned his rank. I've seen many officers with that attitude get set straight by a Gunny and believe me its not pretty.

Respect until given proof the person doesn't deserve it. What more can you do?

So what if that serviceman was there because they had no other options? Not every military member is the selfless, sacrificing person we want them to be.

What if that serviceman was only there to pay for thier education as a stepping stone to getting thier doctorate?

I wasn't goin to touch on this, but I agree.

I know a few guys I went to school with that joined the military to avoid court troubles and possible jail time. Others for the sole reason of free college tuition. Admirable.

The sacrifice isn't always there, but that shouldn't tarnish the respect of the uniform or their title.

Agreed on both counts. I use their title out of respect. Just as I use sir and ma'am for those w a GED.... Out of respect.

Do you know how hard it is to obtain a doctoral degree? I'm sorry, but I'm going to think higher of the guy that worked his *** of and obtained the highest level of education, over the guy that did not finish HS. Quite certain every employer that is not manual labor will feel the same.

Pretty narrow minded considering you don't even know the first thing about the 2 people, other than a title.

For some, just to be able to get to a position to obtain a Ged takes tremendous courage and effort because of situations life has put them in. That doesn't even speak about how good a person they are.

With my wife working in the medical field, I've been around quite a few doctors and some I wouldn't give the time of day to because they are egotistical asses. Others are great people and that means much more than their title.

I have a cousin that is both a medical doctor and a lawyer. Passed boards and everything.4.0 in high school and never studied.

This was an easy feat for her, considering she has a photographic memory with a very high IQ.

Not to mention she had the mens to achieve the goals she set for herself.

Not everyone has the same means and have to take a harder road.

I was under the assumption this was an "all things equal" scenario.

I have 2 people in front of me. They are dressed exactly the same, and all I know about these people are that one has a PhD, and the other a GED. Guess which one I, and 100% of non moronic people think of more highly?

Pretty simple if you ask me.

And please, no more anecdotal little stories. They hold no value.

Kinda like when you judge people by their yard or their cargo shorts. Just moronic
