Yep, I do vacuum seal. My wife managed to get everything in the fridge's freezer so I might hold off on getting a new freezer. I'm a little afraid if I had the extra space then a lot of food would be wasted since it more than likely would become packed full.
Space is definitely better utilized in a chest ... but I would rather be able to find and organize my stuff which is much easier in an upright, IMO
I have an upright and wish I had a chest style to go with it.My upright is getting full and I had to store a couple deer heads this year and the upright became a pain. The heads kept pushing the door open because there just wasn't enough room. Since you already have an upright,I would suggest going with a chest style as well. This gives you options.
I don't have an upright unless you count the half of the fridge. If I get anything, I think it will be the small chest freezer.
+/- $150 @ Lowe's. For a small family, it's great. I have 2 freezers in fridge's that are for things other than venison. I leave enough room in the chest for a head "just in case". It'll hold enough to feed us, even still.
I guess I misread the part about the fridge freezer.Probably because I am going through a that delima right now.
Do two people really need a big upright freezer? I don't think we do. SO....I think thats why Im going with a small chest if I buy anything at all.
They have small uprights. Keep in mind, once you have a freezer, regardless of type, it will fill up, almost as if by magic :D .
I have 2 uprights. I like the organization and ease of access. I used to have a chest freezer and I remember a pain to keep organized. Then when you had it organized you'd have to dig to the bottom to find something and back to a pile of frozen stuff everywhere lol. Apples to apples I do think you can pack more in a chest freezer, but I'd rather have everything nice and neat. Oh .. and you'll never not fill it up. I have 2 full size uprights that are pretty full right now (one empty shelf)
Finch: If you go the chest freezer route, here's a suggestion....... ...........milk crates. You're welcome.
Along GMMAT's tip.. I use heavy duty handled tote bags. Corn goes in one bag, fish in another, burger... etc. Much easier than rooting through individual packages of stuff
Thanks for the milkcrate and tote bag tips....makes sense. I did see some small uprights on Sears.com One is like 22" wide and 49" tall...seems pretty little but may be enough to do the trick. I just have to make sure not to kill a buck wider than 22" if I place him in the freezer in preparation for my taxi. :D
