Our fridge's freezer is overflowing especially since I got my buck back from the processor today. I have no more room and you must open the door with caution. :) I want this new freezer to be an "overflow" so to speak and not filled to the rim. I'm undecided if we should get an upright or small chest freezer? I know an upright is better for organizing but I like the smaller chest freezers.

Does everyone with a chest freezer have it filled to the top and waste food? Any tips on some good ways to keep it organized. I think the small chest freezer would also be good for temporarily storing a buck/cape or anything else I want to mount. Guess I could do this with an upright too? Any advice?

Me being the tightwad I am....found a used upright on Craigslist for $150. :D Its a frigidaire and they say its in good condition and freezes well. I buy lots off of CL but kinda wonder about buying an appliance.

I think I'm making this a harder decision than it needs to be. I like having NO regrets on my purchases though.

One thing to consider ... a self defrosting freezer will not keep meat as long ...

I've got 5 chest freezers and 1 upright. Love the upright, especially for organizing. Sometimes things get "lost" at the bottom of a chest freezer.

Bingo! This is the biggest reason FOR the upright ...

Bingo. The chest freezers don't dump all of their cold air when opened but, if you're not opening the freezer that much the upright is much better for organizing. The chest can be organized better if you utilize baskets but you are still stacking stuff you just only have to move a couple of baskets instead of a bunch of frozen stuff.

Yep, these guys are correct on the upright. I've got both and when there isn't a surplus of venison, the upright is the one that is used and I unplug the chest freezer. I've got a family "side" beef business and have been around freezers for a long time......the uprights are what you want. Things get lost at the bottom of chest freezers and it's impossible to really organize one.

I don't like upright freezers at all. Every time I opened the door something fell out. I sold ours and bought a chest freezer and like it much better.

I have one of each, and prefer the upright hands down.

Try shoving a cape in a normal sized upright freezer, Tony. :D They both have their places, but I much prefer the chest style.

I have four chest freezers and an upright freezer.

As you already know.. Chest freezers are cheaper and use less energy. Uprights are easier to organize. You can cram bigger stuff in chest freezers. (I have a 50lb fish in one :) )

    Don't get a frost-free freezer!!

If you're organized about putting your food in the chest freezer and you'll be fine.

Frost-free freezers dehydrate (freezer burn) your food.

...and if your freezer gets a layer of ice like regular freezers eventually do and you have to defrost it... it's a good time to re-organize your food in the freezer. (or have a feast)

vaccum pack it and nothing gets dried out unless you're trying to keep meat for 2 or 3 years.

Exactly. A freezer without a vacuum packer is only halfway there.
