I think conservation should be required, and that hunting is a conservation tool. If the student elects to continue with full on HE then it should be available to them.

I also think gun safety and awareness should be taught in school. The ignorance of way too many people in regards to even basic gun terminology and safe handling is appalling. Every single person should be able to load and unload a gun should they come across one.

2 Chicago cops were just hit and killed by a metra train while in pursuit of a shooting suspect. The suspect was caught, and is claiming (much of which appears to be corroborated) that he found the gun in a fanny pack on the platform, took the gun out and it accidentally discharged. (Nobody was hit.)

Was it truly accidental? We will never know. But if every public school had a gun safety class he could not so easily claim that.

He should not have ran, but he should also have had a basic knowledge of guns and gun safety.

Yes, Please put it in schools, mandatory class, Teaching the young about guns, Gun use and safety will go a long way to help these people understand guns better which will lead to less gun obstructionism

No it shouldn't be required unless the locality wants it included. Best thing about our country is local and state laws.

However, conservation should be taught nationwide and should be encouraged by everyone.

I don't know about hunters education, but I personally feel firearm safety should be pushed in every school/state. So much fear and misinformation could be eliminated if kids were taught that guns are not sentient beings causing massive amounts of destruction on their own. And proper firearm handling protocol should reduce incidents.

    100% agree on that.

I took HE at the local high school in the late eighties when I was in eighth grade, it was a two day 4 hours each day deal. Friday from 4-8pm after school and Saturday 8am- noon with lunch followed by target shooting. Great experience.

same here, except it was part of a 10-12th grade 1 semester elective called "Field and Stream Conservation". Was a decent class, actually. But honestly we spent most of the time watching VHS tapes of Dan Fitzgerald running around in a flannel shirt shooting big bucks and yelling "did you get the pass through!?!?!?" at his cameraman.
