My Dad is a fireman and only works 10 days a month. 24 hour shifts, with alternating 2/3/2/3 shifts per week. Sometimes I wish I were a fireman.
Question for you, and I have no knowledge of this since I don't know any EMT/Firefighters. Are you constantly working during those 24 hours on? Also, do you feel that you would be more prone to make an incorrect judgement, or mistake in your 23rd hour than your 3rd hour?
I dont think it would help with obesity. Stress maybe, but 12 hour workdays dont bother me. I would much rather have 32 hour weeks. I think we as a society are procrastinators and setting the bar low will only make people aim low. In reality 32 hour workweek should make people have better time management, but it wont. Atleast in America.
The majority of the time you are not working the full 24 hours. I know at my job, ill do between 5-7 calls per shift (average), and roughly spend 8-10 hours in the squad (average). Now some shifts are different, ive had days where ill spend 20+ hours in the squad. We have a kitchen, living quarters, bathrooms and sleeping quarters at my bases (we have 2). The majority of the shift is spent there if we are not on calls (we can go out to the store/gas station, ect if we need to (in the squad)). I sleep alot in-between calls just so im sharp when i do go out.
to add to this i know at some companys i have done ride time for you have to do your chores around the base. the crew coming in for the next 24 doesnt wanna have to smell your dirty socks you left or see the food that is stuck to the top of the microwave cause you put your soup in there too long. and dont forget you have to wash those rigs! you dont want your company to get a bad reputation when you go down the road with "wash me" wrote in the dust lol caleb i have a lot of respect for what you guys do as a emt and a first responder i have seen some of the tough calls you guys have to make and yet you still get called ambulance drivers lol
There is no way I could do what I do in a 32 hour per week. I work 50 to 60 hrs every week and most days I feel like I could stay all night and still not finish everything I need to. I dont care how efficient I am there is no way I could cut 18+ hours out of my work week. Sent from my SGH-T959 using Xparent Green Tapatalk 2
I'd be all for just going home when my work was done. Most weeks it would be very short. Some like the past 2 would be nearly endless. What I'd REALLY love to see is more vacation time. 4-5 weeks to start, and 7-8 after a few years. What's the point in making any money when I have no time to take off and enjoy myself.
We do this everyday. There are daily chores, jobs, responsibilities and whatnot. Not to mention mandatory training's, PR events, billing company meetings and dealing with medicare. Thank you.
32 hour work weeks would mean there would be more cops. So I would say no, lets not do the 32 hour work week thing.
Some folks I know can't make a living on 32 hours worth of pay each week. That's why they call in sick one day a week.
I think it would actually be better to keep the 40hr week but make it a 4 day work week instead by switching to 4-10's instead of 5-8's. I currently work 4-11hr days mon-thurs and love the 3 day weekends.
That's been my schedule since I started here, 4-10's. But I have an extra hour and a half for drive time.
I love mine. I actually only live literally 5mins away from work so I have 4 -11hr days which gives me 4 hours overtime every week aswell. My hours will be switching up some in a few weeks though after starting this new position and will most likely offer even more overtime.
I interviewed for a job a few years ago that allowed you to create your own schedule. They didn't care when you worked, just as long as you put in your 40. Most of them worked 3 12s, and a 4 on Thursday. I really wanted that job.
