I just purchased a Canon HF G20 camcorder and am wondering if I should buy a shotgun mic or wireless mic? I know audio is very important in producing a high quality video, but since I have only one port, I need to decide which mic is more important. Looking for opinions, Thanks!

I would say the shotgun mic would be more important if you can only have one. The internal mic's on all these cameras suck. They will pick up a ton of wind noise and give you nearly unusable audio. 90% of the time you are talking, the camera will be pointed directly at you so the shotgun will do a good job of picking up your audio. A wireless mic will do a very poor job at picking up the ambient sound.

I would suggest starting with the Shotgun and if you eventually feel like you need both, you can get a beachtek adapter that will let you have both.

Thanks for the fast response! What camera arm do you use btw? I've seen a few of your posts but never looked at the brand name.

I agree 100% with this.. For your situation, shotgun mic is your best bet.. if you go wireless I would definitely recommend going with 2 mics

I would recommend any of the muddy arms.. well worth the money. Just chose one that best suits your camera weight.

Last season I used a Muddy Pro Camera arm. I like the compact and lightweight of this arm, but it has some trade offs as well. I feel like there's quite a bit of bounce in it, and I'm not a huge fan of how you lock the horizontal tilt lock. I like the idea of the silent strap, but I felt like I couldn't get the base as tight against the tree as I would have liked. This contributed to the bouncyness. It's not a bad arm, but I'm looking for something better.

I have also used a Third Arm Pro and have to say it was rock solid, even with a heavy camera, but it was heavy and bulky. The base weighed a ton and was a bit of a pain to pack in and out.

I also used a custom made arm made by Skip Enterprises. I liked just about everything about that are except for how it attached to the tree.

I'm hoping to find an arm that is extremely compact, yet rock solid. I may never find it though......
