Any of you folks going out for shotgun/muzzleloader season? Illinoiz season opens tomorrow. I drew a tag at a state park about 10 minutes from my house. The deer are pretty scarce so it's tough hunting. I'm not real excited about it but they only give out about 25-30 tags for the place so I should probably go. (I had no idea when I applied that I'd have six deer in the freezer already) I also have very little confidence with my shotgun. I did take it to the range today. I spent $20.00 for a range fee and shot it one single time. It was on and if I shoot it much more I just start flinching real bad. Not to mention the slugs I'm shooting are $4.00 each. I'm hoping a doe comes by early and I get her quick and easy. (yeah, sure that'll happen) Then I can go bowhunt over at another park that allows bowhunting during gun season. That's the plan anyhow. So what about youz guys?
I'm hunting Marion County. Both of my sons are joining my dad and I this year. Should be a great time. I don't even care if I get a shot, I just hope the kids get an opportunity to get a deer.
Good luck to both of you gunners, I'm in a bow-only county so I'll be out with the Diamond in my hand trying to fill one of these two buck tags that's burning a hole in my pocket.
I'll be out tomorrow evening once I get home from school. I decided to use the ML this year so it'll be a little bit different. Hopefully things don't get too worked up in the morning and I'll have a shot at a nice buck.
I'm lucky to hunt in rifle zones in NY. Most of the southern part of NY is shotgun. I'll be out with the .270 this weekend. I'll be up north in NY, in the Adirondacks for a big woods hunt. They have paper company land up there, where you can literally get 3,4,5+ miles in from the nearest road. I'll be after deer and bear, and they honestly see about an even number of both. After that, I'll be hunting with the bow only for the rest of firearms season, and then the late archery seasons.
Hey, sometimes a plan comes together. Not the big doe I was originally looking for but it came in with a group of five and was the one that offered the clear shot. This is only my second deer with a shotgun. I was so excited I shook like crazy for about 10 minutes. Man, you'd think I'd never killed a deer before. That was funny. Anyhow, the only down side is that it slid down into a deep, steep ravine after I shot it. K and I had to crawl up the side of the ravine to drag it up out of there. Kind of makes me glad it wasn't bigger. Squinty eyed me. You'd think I was half Japanese or sumpthin'. :d Fried backstraps and onions tonight. Mmmmm...
It would have beem cooler Chris if you had emptied 3 shells on that doe.. then turned and looked at the heavens and stated.. "best damn 12 bucks I ever spent". Congrats on the doe anyway.
Congrats on the doe. And to answer the original post our gun seasons opens monday and I will be hunting a shotgun only area. Other than taking a thumping, I don't mind hunting with the slugger, mines pretty accurate
