wow , i only started on a 32lb recurve , then moved to a 48lb , and now for the last 3 yrs i been happy hunting with my 52lb recurve , although i fitted it with dampners and string silencers ,and ofcourse a good 15ft of 3d cammo tape "leaf pattern" ive never had an issue with penetration and power , all round its a beautiful peice of equipment
I have shot 65-70# for years with my compounds. However, when I decided to get my 1st recurve I went with 48# at 28" and I'm glad I did! Could I pull more? YES, but why? When starting out with something new like this getting your form down and not doing damage to muscles that aren't used to it is far more important. I'm fairly new to the Traditional side of things, but I will tell you this...The guys above are right! Listen to them and you will be thanking them later. Take Care, Allen
Oh ya, one last thing...I bought a new compound last year and guess what???? I got it at 60# max. It's alot more enjoyable to shoot, my accuracy has increased big time and hunting late season in those cold temps. will also be alot nicer when it time comes to draw after sitting still for so long.
I used to shoot a 65# X-Force , i got my first longbow last year and started off at 50# . I can pull it back no problem , then i had a 57# Elk hunting Yarra longbow made and trust me Finch , you will know you are pulling that 7# weight . 50# is a good weight to start IMO , you could always move up in weight after , but 50# is enough for most American Big Game anyway . I'm hoping to get a collection going too , i'd like a one piece bow next i think . Recurve or Longbow 58" long so i have no trouble travelling , should i decide to travel with it .
